McDATA's ROC Adds EMC Rainfinity for File Virtualization

ROC (Remote Office Consolidation) customers can gain greater data protection and management efficiencies now that McDATA Corp. has worked with EMC Corporation to add EMC's Rainfinity centralized file virtualization and management capabilities to the McDATA ROC.

McDATA's ROC offering is a set of products and services that let companies consolidate, centrally manage and protect all remote office data types, without slowing the pace of real-time global business.

"The EMC Rainfinity Global File Virtualization solution is a natural expansion to McDATA's ROC," said Raj Das, vice president of product marketing at McDATA. "While the McDATA WDS Accelerator enables LAN-like access to consolidated data, EMC's Rainfinity delivers the movement and centralized management of files that are now consolidated at the core. Customers consolidating remote office data to the data center will gain a higher level of file protection, simplify management and maintain a higher quality of service to remote office users."

McDATA's remote office consolidation solution accelerates data access between the remote office and data center, enabling seamless migration of file-structured data. This consolidation of file-structured data then provides better utilization of storage resources across heterogeneous Networked Attached Storage (NAS) systems and the ability to centrally manage, monitor and protect.

"McDATA understands and addresses the issues associated with remote user computing," said Jack Norris, director of virtualization marketing at EMC. "The combination of EMC Rainfinity and McDATA's ROC solution better enables enterprise customers to optimize their NAS deployments by non-disruptively consolidating and managing storage across heterogeneous environments."

McDATA demonstrated the Rainfinity technology at EMC World last week in Boston. The demo showed Rainfinity working in conjunction with the ROC portfolio, specifically the McDATA WDS Accelerator, which overcomes the latency and bandwidth limitations across a regional or global WAN. The simulation showed how remote client workstations can access and save files over a distance of 3,000 miles (equal to the distance between Boston and Los Angeles).
