Blade.org Delivers Two 'Security-in-a-Box' Solutions
Formally established in February, Blade.org provides collaboration and tools to ISVs and business partners looking to reach new markets and customers for blade-based technologies, representing the world's fastest growing server market segment. Blades provide an opportunity for cost savings as companies are able to collapse servers, storage devices, networking infrastructure and security appliances into a single location in the datacenter.
New Blade.org members announced include AudioCodes, Azlan, Azul Systems, Blade Network Technologies, Chelsio, ClearCube Technology, ClearSpeed Technology, DataCom Systems, Ericom Software, IDT, LANDesk Software, Mazu Networks, Neterion, Privacy Networks, SilverStorm Technologies, Sirius Computer Solutions, Softricity, Tarari, Teradici and Xambala.
"Today marks a milestone for Blade.org with 60 companies joined together to speed the creation of innovative products and solutions to clients around the globe," said Doug Balog, chairman of Blade.org, vice president of IBM BladeCenter and keynote speaker at the Server Blade Summit industry conference on April 19. "Research and development collaboration has become the new model for market success. The Blade.org community's first customer deployments show that when technology is made open and accessible, we can speed the time which customers can move from concept to deployment."
"Security-in-a-Box" Solutions
OpenService Inc introduced its real-time security threat and compliance management solution based on IBM BladeCenter. In this new packaged solution, OpenService ported its Security Management Center (SMC) to BladeCenter to provide a highly-available and scalable security information management solution. OpenService is also working with Blade.org partner Avnet to deliver security information solutions to the market.
The solution collects, analyzes and correlates security event data in real-time from across the enterprise. As such, it centralizes the management of risks, vulnerabilities, real-time events and post-attack forensics, shortening the cycle of security threat identification and remediation.
"The momentum that IBM has placed behind opening up the blade ecosystem has already helped OpenService identify and develop new solution opportunities for enterprises facing the challenges of protecting critical data from security threats," said Phil Hollows, vice president of marketing at OpenService. "Our success with Security Management Center at Woodbine Entertainment Group shows the value of Blade.org evangelizing the blade market further, driving blade adoption to mainstream, and providing customers with new products and solutions."
Woodbine Entertainment Group -- an Ontario-based horse racing, gaming and entertainment corporation -- recently purchased the OpenService SMC solution to improve security, availability and operations efficiency for its business. Woodbine expects that the solution will more effectively protect its customers' betting records across its system for hundreds of mobile devices and betting terminals, while helping maintain its accounting records in accordance to government privacy guidelines.
"OpenService and IBM provided a reliable and scalable platform to enable superior threat management, log management, security policy compliance and regulatory compliance -- all via a uniform, real-time security dashboard," said Randy Folmes, director of information technology for Woodbine Entertainment Group. "OpenService running on IBM BladeCenter allows our administrators to focus on security functions critical to the entertainment industry instead of IT configuration and maintenance."
DataCom Systems Inc. announced the DataCom Digital Video Surveillance Solution on IBM BladeCenter, specially suited for law enforcement, gaming and financial services customers. By partnering with Blade.org members IBM and Avnet, DataCom is delivering a computing platform to manage and store the data from video surveillance cameras to safeguard an organization's physical assets. Joining Blade.org will provide DataCom with a thriving ecosystem of partners as it develops future solutions as well.
The solution allows security personnel to remotely access, view and e-mail recorded video footagehelping speed interaction with law enforcement. Because the solution compresses images on a 64-bit video capture board, it frees more than 80 percent of the BladeCenter resources for enterprise applications.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office and Detention Facility in Arkansas recently deployed the solution to help monitor its new 710-bed detention facility. The facility can now track and manage up to 224 video surveillance cameras, while storing video for a minimum of 30 days, improving its prior VCR system. BladeCenter's integrated iSCSI switch provides a single connection from the chassis to the storage array, speeding on-the-fly information retrieval.
"Security surveillance is critical in the field of law enforcement," said Steve Kizzar, director of information technology for Washington County. "With the construction of our new detention facility and sheriff's office, we needed a high-performance, scalable computing platform that would not only store video and maintain the recordings for a much longer period of time than traditional-looped video tape, but also adhere to our limited space, power and cooling constraints. By using this solution, we were able to consolidate our IT systems to improve network management and ease operational logistics."
