GigaSpaces Offers Scale-Out App Server on EC2
SAN FRANCISCO, June 26 -- GigaSpaces Technologies today announced the availability of a "cloud application server" that enables rapid development of scalable, fault-tolerant applications on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). Using GigaSpaces' eXtreme Application Platform (XAP) -- the scale-out application server -- the solution leverages the full benefits of the on-demand model of cloud computing. This includes transactional and data-intensive applications, such as those often used in Web 2.0, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and enterprise applications. Additionally, GigaSpaces is offering a usage-based pricing model (per CPU/hour) and enables cloud portability allowing businesses to move on-premise applications to the cloud and vice versa.
Customers utilizing the GigaSpaces "cloud application server" solution on Amazon EC2 will experience such benefits as:
- On-demand scalability on the cloud: the application grows and shrinks across nodes in the cloud based on actual volumes, limiting costs of required resources only for when they are actually needed.
- Self-healing: in case of failure on the cloud, the application instantly fails-over. with no data loss and ensures reliability is constantly maintained.
- High-performance: the application performs with minimum latency in the cloud, with the GigaSpaces solution managing data in memory and ensuring it is co-located in the same cloud node as the relevant business logic.
- Simple and rapid development: applications are written as if to a single machine and GigaSpaces XAP handles deployment on the cloud including partitioning, load-balancing and fail-over.
GigaSpaces released the initial version of its Amazon EC2 offering in November 2007. Start-ups and larger enterprises alike are currently using GigaSpaces on Amazon EC2 as an intended production platform, as well as for large-scale testing. BazuMedia Inc., a GigaSpaces customer, provides a cutting-edge social network and information distribution system for sports events, including race timings, results, scores through SMS messaging and interactive fan participation.
"By combining the GigaSpaces scale-out middleware with the Amazon EC2 cloud computing service, we now have a cost-effective application infrastructure that is fault-tolerant, flexible and scalable," said Paul Itoi, president of BazuMedia. Running GigaSpaces on Amazon EC2 allows us to utilize an on-demand, pay-per-use computing utility -- meaning we only pay for hardware and software we actually use, without any upfront infrastructure investments."

In addition to customer interest in the GigaSpaces solution, GigaSpaces is building an ecosystem of partners and complementary technologies. GridDynamics, Excelain, ViewCade and CitiTech are a few of the professional services firms who have joined the GigaSpaces - Certified Partner Program.
GigaSpaces has integrated its EC2 offering with a number of products to make deploying and managing applications on the Amazon cloud simple and quick. The company recently announced a joint solution with RightScale's automated cloud computing management platform as well as a joint solution with the Elastic Server On-Demand from CohesiveFT, enabling cloud portability. Additionally, GigaSpaces provides support for the recently announced Sun OpenSolaris platform on Amazon EC2 as well as Amazon's FireFox plug-in, ElasticFox.
