NCOIC Explores Utility Computing, Grid, Virtualization

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 -- On Dec. 6, there was a session on "Utility Computing, Grids, and Virtualization" at a meeting of the Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium in St. Petersburg, Fla. The speakers included leaders from industry, government, academia and standards groups. The purpose of the Session was to explore the future of distributed virtualization and adaptable computing infrastructure architectures. The session was co-hosted by the Open Grid Forum. The proceedings of the session are available at http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ServerVirtualization.

As an outgrowth of the session, a discussion is underway about a possible federal community of practice (CoP) in "Adaptable Computing Infrastructure." The federal government has been a strong advocate and supporter of CoPs, which are defined in Wikipedia as "the process of social learning that occurs when people who have a common interest in some subject or problem collaborate over an extended period to share ideas, find solutions, and build innovations. It refers as well to the stable group that is formed from such regular interactions."

Two of the most widely recognized and accomplished federal CoPs are the Federal Semantic Interoperability CoP (http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SICoP) and the Federal SOA CoP (http://web-services.gov/soacop/), which were created by the Federal CIO Council's Best Practices and Architecture & Infrastructure Committees to foster a public-private partnership, in support of the E-Government Act of 2002, that work on cross-boundary transformation of government information technology services.

The upcoming Virginia conferences of both the SICoP, on Feb. 5 (http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SICoPSpecialConference_2008_02_05), and SOA CoP, from April 30-May 1 (http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SOACoPDemo5), are open and free to all. The SOA CoP meeting will include a track discussing the possible formation of a new federal CoP related to "Adaptable Computing Infrastructures."

Oracle Shifts Grid Focus to the Application

Oracle's newest candidate to solve some of IT Nation's biggest problems has now officially hit the campaign trail, and its name is WebLogic Application Grid. This new assemblage of software is meant to put grid capabilities at the foundation of an organization's computing operations by pooling IT resources and allocating them to workloads as needed. But this is one solution Oracle is not labeling "cloud computing."

Cloud Computing and the Financial Crisis

A somewhat neglected aspect of the current financial crisis is the huge spike in trading volumes in recent days. In some cases, they have raised to more than double the average of the months (and years) that preceded the crisis. Systems, of course, don't care if stocks are going up or down; they just need to handle the transactions. Cloud computing can help ensure they meet this task.
