Appistry Goes Green With EnergySaver
Appistry announced Appistry EnergySaver, an innovative new power management add-on for Appistry Enterprise Application Fabric (EAF), the company’s award-winning software platform for scalable data/transaction processing. Appistry EAF simplifies the development and deployment of large-scale applications by virtualizing them across a pool of inexpensive computers in the datacenter. With Appistry EnergySaver, customers further benefit by minimizing the power consumed by these data- and compute-intensive applications.
Using Appistry EnergySaver, application fabric administrators are able to easily define policies establishing acceptable system workload levels. Appistry EnergySaver constantly monitors fabric utilization and -- based on the EnergySaver policy in effect -- automatically turns off computers when application utilization is low, and then reactivates them when additional capacity is required.
“Appistry EAF allows customers like GeoEye to shift the economics associated with their high-volume business applications,” said Kevin Haar, CEO of Appistry. “EnergySaver builds on the fact that applications running on a fabric are decoupled from the servers on which they run, and simply turns off machines when they aren’t needed. This allows customers to significantly reduce power consumption and, as a result, slash energy costs, cut cooling requirements and reduce their impact on the environment.”
Dulles, Va.-based GeoEye, an Appistry customer, is the leading provider of high-resolution satellite imagery to the U.S. Department of Defense and commercial customers. Appistry EAF provides a highly scalable and agile platform for the company’s image processing applications, scaling them transparently across many commodity-grade computers.
Because the amount of work required to process the satellite’s output varies significantly based on its position and current meteorological conditions, GeoEye will see significant cost savings as Appistry EnergySaver optimizes the number of active computers at any given time.
