OPTORSIM 2.0 RELEASED

Version 2.0 of the OptorSim Grid simulation tool has now been released. It is available for download from the OptorSim Web site at http://cern.ch/edg-wp2/optimization/download.html.

OptorSim was initially developed by the EU DataGrid, with major contributions from GridPP. It can be used for testing file replication and job scheduling algorithms.

With OptorSim, a user can set up a Grid topology and list of jobs to run, choose a job scheduler and replica optimization strategy and watch the performance of the chosen algorithms in real time with the graphical user interface, or with the summary of results which is output at the end of the simulation. The code is easily extensible to new strategies and algorithms.

Improvements on version 1.0 include:

  • completely redesigned and vastly improved GUI.
  • new timing model to allow fast simulation times.
  • choice of job submission patterns.
  • variable file sizes.

Caitriana Nicholson of Glasgow University, one of the OptorSim developers, explained, "The new release of OptorSim makes the simulation of large-scale data grids such as LCG much faster and more realistic than previous versions, and the new GUI gives a wealth of previously unvisualized information. This will make it much easier to conduct research into a variety of grid scenarios, including those which do not exist today but will be very important for the start-up and running eras of the LHC."

OptorSim will continue to be used for the investigation of different optimization strategies in the context of current and future high energy physics data grids such as LCG and GridPP. Further information is in the user guide which is available with the release and on the Web site.
