Special Features
- EUROPE LOOKS TO CONTINENTAL SUPERCOMPUTER
- Several leading European HPC centers have devised an innovative strategy
to build a terascale supercomputing facility with continental scope,
called Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications
(DEISA). The resulting system will consist of more than 4,000 processors, a huge
memory space and an aggregate computing power of over 22 teraflops.
- WS SECURITY SPECS ADVANCE; DEUTSCHE BANK PRESENTS SECURE WS APP
By Alan J. Weissberger, Contributing Editor
- At the Nov. 2-4 meeting of the Web Services Interoperability (WS-I)
Organization, excellent progress was made on several WS Basic Security
Profile specifications, sample applications and test tools. GGF had
earlier decided that Grid security would be based on Web services security, so
that makes the WS-I Security work of interest to anyone building a Grid.
- INDUSTRY-FIRST GRID COMPUTING RESOURCE GUIDE ON THE HORIZON
- Designed for IT editors and reporters, IT decision makers, and enterprise
computing innovators, the guide will include complete listings of the
suppliers of Grid hardware, middleware and enabling technology;
information on the leading integration consultants; and descriptions of notable
installations.
- WEST VIRGINIA'S GLOBAL GRID EXCHANGE TO BE POWERED BY HP
- West Virginia will procure from HP the hardware required to support this
innovative venture -- from desktop PCs for customer service personnel to
robust and reliable high-end servers.
- INDIANA UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS BRIDGE COMMUNITIES AT SC2004
- New developments from the Pervasive Technologies Labs center around
networking and Grid computing. The Advanced Network Management Laboratory
is demonstrating, for the first time, its Porcupine wireless network
monitoring system (porcupine.iu.edu).
- NCAR SELECTS PLATFORM COMPUTING GRID TECHNOLOGY
- Platform LSF HPC will enable NCAR to integrate its heterogeneous
computing environment under a single workload management system and job scheduler,
and to also evaluate, develop and deploy Grid-based computation and data
management technologies.
- SUN, STREAMLINE BUILD 3 TERAFLOP GRID FOR UNIV. OF NOTTINGHAM
- The new Grid built using AMD Opteron processor- based Sun Fire V20z
servers, will rank as the second largest academic computer system in
Europe to date, and the eighth largest worldwide.
- MANY UNIVERSITIES TURN TO SUN FOR GRID SOLUTIONS
- The College of William and Mary, Texas Advanced Computing Center at the
University of Texas, and Pennsylvania State University are using Sun
Microsystems' Grid computing technologies to enhance their academic
research centers and improve their return on investment.
Systems/Enterprise
- WEB SERVICES RELIABILITY BECOMES OASIS STANDARD
By Alan J. Weissberger, NEC Corp voting member of OASIS WS-RM TC
- At its Nov. 10-11 meeting, the OASIS WS-RM (Reliable Messaging) TC voted
to send the WS Reliability specification version 1.1 to OASIS for
publication as a standard. All enterprise Grid builders will be interested
in this WS Reliability standard, and how it is being used in the Japanese
Business Grid project.
- EGENERA EXPANDS REACH IN EUROPE
- Egenera's COO cites Germany's large financial services market and the
region's adoption of Linux and utility computing as reasons for expansion.
- IBM, FIU TO DEVELOP AUTONOMIC COMPUTING SOLUTIONS FOR HOSPITALS
- If you've ever waited well past your appointed time to see a doctor, then
this announcement's for you. IBM and Florida International University
(FIU) launched two new research projects that will use autonomic computing
technologies to help solve every day challenges in the health care
industry.
- PAREMUS UNVEILS UTILITY DATACENTER ECOSYSTEM
- Paremus announced the Infiniflow Utility Datacenter Ecosystem (UDE), an
environment where enterprises can build business applications on a
self-healing, dynamically scalable and functionally evolvable compute
fabric, providing unprecedented cost, resilience and agility benefits.
Applications
- GRIDBUS PROJECT TO RELEASE GridSim TOOLKIT 3.1
- The new version of GridSim has been substantially improved. It
incorporates a network extension into GridSim, incorporates a background
traffic functionality based on a probabilistic distribution, incorporates
a functionality that reads workload traces taken from supercomputers, and
adds ant build file to compile GridSim source files.
- SUN, TOPSPIN DELIVER GRID SOLUTIONS FOR SOLARIS 10
- Under terms of the agreement, Sun and Topspin will offer integrated
utility computing solutions that include Topspin's intelligent fabric
products and Sun's AMD Opteron-based systems. The solution links servers
together into high performance Grids, virtualizes network and storage
connectivity, and provisions applications on demand.
- UNITED DEVICES ANNOUNCES GRID MP 4.2 WITH MAC OS SUPPORT
- In addition to Mac OS, United Devices Grid MP supports a range of
operating systems including Windows, Solaris, AIX and Linux. With the new
release come additional management features as well, like integration with
existing identity management systems for simpler Grid interaction and
expansion.
- WOLFRAM RESEARCH ANNOUNCES gridMathematica 2
- gridMathematica is optimized for virtually all Top500 supercomputers,
heterogeneous Grids and workstations. With gridMathematica, scientists and
engineers can easily develop parallel applications using the uniquely
productive and interactive Mathematica environment and deploy them
seamlessly on any supercomputer.
- THE MathWorks UNVEILS DISTRIBUTED TOOLBOX FOR MATLAB, SIMULINK
- The Distributed Computing Toolbox lets users divide this sample MATLAB
application, plotting the performance of five equalizers, into several
tasks, each of which performs the same calculation for different
signal-to-noise ratios and is executed on a remote worker.
