- GGF MAY DRIVE FUTURE OPTICAL NETWORK SPECS

- On Oct. 25, the Optical Internetworking Forum hosted a half-day workshop
with the GGF. The goal was for OIF participants to better understand Grid
network requirements and to identify joint (GGF-OIF) work items. Along
with a summary of the event, Alan Weissberger gives the highlights of
presentations by Franco Travostino of Nortel, John Strand of AT&T, and Jim
Jones of Alcatel.
- GRID INFRASTRUCTURE PROTOCOLS TO BE TESTED FOR INTEROPERABILITY

- At the Oct. 26-27 meeting of the OASIS WS-RF TC, several important draft
standards were progressed that will have a huge impact on Grid
infrastructure. Orignially part of GGF Open Grid Services Infrastructure
(OGSI), the WS-RF standards will provide the basis for modelling stateful
resources behind a Web Service and also specify their lifetime.
- LOUISIANA INVESTS $40M IN STATEWIDE OPTICAL NETWORK
- The Louisiana Optical Network Initiative is a $40 million fiber network
is part of the National LambdaRail, and grants access to LSU, Louisiana Tech
University, LSU Medical Centers in Shreveport and New Orleans, the
University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southern University, the University
of New Orleans and Tulane University.
- SUN MICROSYSTEMS SELECTS UC-DAVIS AS CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
- The COE utilizes Sun's Grid computing environment to increase the
effectiveness and efficiency of computing resources and enable
collaboration among four key research centers to advance experiments and programs.

- WESTERN EUROPE GRID SERVER MKT TO HIT $1.8 BILLION BY 2008
- A recent IDC study predicts that Grid computing adoption in Western
Europe, although still nascent, will reach beyond the High Performance
Computing space and will become more pervasive in commercial data centers
over the next few years.
- BLUE TITAN LAUNCHES INT'L OPS TO MEET GLOBAL DEMAND FOR SOAs
- Blue Titan's international offices, based in London, will serve as the
headquarters for the company's growing effort to serve both the
distributed nature of customers' SOA infrastructure and to seize the SOA opportunity
with international corporations.
- DCML CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY, YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS
- DCML promotes the use of data center automation and utility computing by
providing a uniform way to represent the IT environment, enabling data
center automation and system management solutions to easily exchange
information about the environment under management.
- NEW WHITEPAPER HIGHLIGHTS CRITICAL ROLE OF GOVERNANCE IN SOAs
- The report, titled "SOA Governance: IT Governance in the Context of
Service Orientation," is an in-depth examination of how service-oriented

- According to Evans Data Corp's new Fall 2004 Web Services/SOA Development
Survey, four in 10 Web Services developers feel that Web Services either
"absolutely" or "probably" diminish the need for Enterprise Application
Integration.
- GridIron PROVIDES GRID SOLUTION FOR IBM LINUX SERVERS
- GridIron Software, a developer of Grid computing solutions, announced it
will work with IBM to bring the GridIron XLR8 Grid computing solution to
enterprises for applications such as digital content creation, business
intelligence and electronic design automation.
- UT SOUTHWESTERN JOINS HiPCAT
- The High Performance Computing Across Texas (HiPCAT) consortium announced
that the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UT
Southwestern) has accepted an invitation to become a member of the
consortium.
