Digi-Data Introduces STORM Xtreme Array

Digi-Data Corp, a manufacturer of enterprise storage systems, introduced the STORM Xtreme Array. Based upon Digi-Data's innovative STORM architecture the STORM Xtreme Array is a quantum step forward in the evolution of modular storage systems design.

Traditional modular storage systems are constrained by fixed storage controller platforms. Scalability in performance and capacity are limited, forcing customers through forklift upgrades, or requiring the purchase of additional systems as requirements increase. The STORM Xtreme Array addresses these challenges from a completely new approach that utilizes a network of storage nodes to eliminate the boundaries created by existing architectures. A single virtualized storage pool may be dynamically expanded to over 300TB.

"Enterprise Strategy Group's research has proven that the future of storage intelligence lies in the fabric, so the distributed Digi-Data architecture is right in line with where the market is heading," said Steve Duplessie, founder of The Enterprise Strategy Group. "By eliminating the closed box concept and all its restrictions, the company has a completely clean slate in which to design product for the future rather than retrofitting from the past."

The STORM Xtreme Array offers a true multi-tenancy platform as the network of storage nodes architecture and virtualized storage pool unite to form a single logical storage system that supports heterogeneous application workloads and server operating systems. Both Fibre Channel and SATA disk drives are supported in any combination rendering a tiered storage infrastructure that enables storage managers to deliver storage that easily aligns with end-user SLAs. Dynamic capacity expansion and XapShot, Digi-Data's data replication application, provide the necessary tool set for data growth and migration.

Claiming highest performance in class, the STORM Xtreme Array can sustain data transfer rates of over 900MB in a three node network cluster delivering the power required for high bandwidth applications such as streaming media.

"The STORM Xtreme Array is the ideal solution for corporate reference data consolidation, xSP platforms, or video applications," said Bill Tomeo, Digi- Data CEO. "The limitations of existing mid-range storage solutions have created a complexity and cost nightmare for customers. With the STORM Xtreme Array customers have a cost effective solution for tight IT budgets with a flexible, modular architecture that easily scales in multiple dimensions to address future requirements."

Management of the STORM Xtreme Array is accomplished through RECON, the STORM System's management application. All storage nodes are accessed through a single integrated management environment. Similar to other members of the STORM family of storage systems, RECON is an array resident application which eliminates the cost and complexity of external storage management applications.
