Sun Achieves Leading Application Server Benchmark Results
Sun Microsystems Inc announced the results of a SPECjAppServer2002 performance
test running BEA WebLogic server on Solaris 9 OS for x86 with MySQL open
source database. The test results have established Sun as delivering the
leading price/performance combination on the market. This hardware and
software combination warrants faster ROI (return on investment) and lower cost
of ownership than competing solutions.
Additionally, BEA is one of several key independent software vendors (ISVs)
that have announced support for their applications on the Solaris OS on x86
systems, demonstrating the continued growth within the Solaris x86 ecosystem
and choice of low-cost solutions.
SPECjAppServer2002 is a client/server benchmark measuring the performance of
an application server. The configuration used to achieve the new record
results included two Sun Fire V20z with 2 AMD Opteron processor running BEA
WebLogic application server software and one Sun Fire V40z with 4 AMD Opteron
processors hosting MySQL database. As a result, Sun demonstrated the best
price/performance of all environments tested, including those from IBM and HP.
The combination of Solaris x86 and AMD Opteron CPUs delivered 58 percent
higher performance than a comparable solution from HP running RedHat Linux, at
half of the price. The full results of the test are available at

About SPECjAPPServer2002
SPEC has designed the SPECjAppServer2002 benchmark to exercise the Java
application server, Java Virtual Machine (JVM), as well as the server
hardware. Joining the client-side SPECjvm98 and the server-side SPECjbb2000
benchmarks, SPECjAppServer2002 continues the SPEC tradition of providing Java
users the most objective and representative benchmarks for measuring a
system's ability to run Java applications. As a true J2EE application the
benchmark will require a functional database and a web server, but the
benchmark has been designed so that these two functions can be combined on a
single system.
