IBM THAILAND GRID PROJECT TO HELP STUDY SHRIMP DNA

The Science and Technology Ministry in Thailand announced a development project with IBM Thailand to transfer nanotechnology in Grid computing, biotechnology and life science.

For the Grid portion of this agreement, IBM has agreed to help the ministry build a Grid computing infrastructure for research.

IBM would help the ministry develop so-called "food traceability" capabilities for local products. Food traceability technology allows authorities to trace the origins of foods to ensure safety –- a recent trend in international trade. The first product the technology will be tested on is shrimp.

Currently, Thailand must import breeder shrimp (shrimp used to start shrimp farms) from other countries. IBM also plans to encourage local researchers to utilize Grid infrastructure to study shrimp DNA so they can develop good shrimp breeders that suit the country’s environment, which in turn would reduce imports.
