- AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COMPUTER SCIENCE COMMUNITY

- In this letter, Tony Hey espouses the benefits and goals of the $444
million U.K. e-Science initiative, including the the e-Infrastructure
(Cyberinfrastructure in the United States), and attempts to correct any
misapprehensions about e-Science that are still out there in the
international computer sciences community.
- IBM ANNOUNCES SLEW OF GRID PROJECTS, INCLUDING EPA
- Among those IBM has helped with Grid solutions are the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, Nippon Steel, Siemens Mobile and NTT Communications. Big
Blue also announced it has completed work with 10 leading software companies
to ready their applications for Grid computing.
- SURA GRID INITIATIVE ENDORSED BY SOUTHERN GOVERNORS
- The Southern Governors' Association endorsed an IT initiative of SURA --
efforts to enable Grid computing, thereby enhancing science capacity and
improving economic competitiveness in the southern United States. Gov.
Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana announced that the state would commit $40M over
the next 10 years to support and expand utilization of this new research
tool.
- GGF'S WALTER STEWART LAYS OUT SOLID CASE FOR GRID
- Recently, GRIDtoday had an opportunity, on the eve of GGF12, to speak to
Walter Stewart, SGI's global coordinator of Grid strategy and co-chair of
the Plenary Program at GGF, on his views on a variety of Grid issues.
- G-CLUSTER GRID BRINGS HIGH-END GAMING INTO HOMES
- The Amino set-top box connects to G-cluster's Grid of computer servers in
the service provider's central office via broadband connection and receives
game graphics and sound to display on the television screen in real time.

- Mazda Motor Corp and NEC Corp announced that Mazda will test Grid
computing technology, which will be incorporated into its core system, in
order to efficiently utilizes the IT resources of many servers in various
locations and provide countermeasures in case of disasters.
- CALLIDUS SPEEDS ROI WITH EIM'S ONLY GRID-BASED ARCHITECTURE
- The TrueComp Grid meets the unique incentive management requirements of
Global 5000 enterprises, allowing them to process millions of transactions
for tens of thousands of employees, in the shortest time period.
- LogicaCMG ENTERS GLOBAL SAP NetWeaver PARTNER INITIATIVE
- SAP NetWeaver works with existing IT infrastructures to facilitate and
manage change, as well as enabling the Enterprise Services Architecture,
SAP's blueprint for service-oriented business solutions.
- ORACLE GRID LETS PARTNERS DELIVER SOLUTIONS ON DEMAND
- The new offering, Oracle On Demand for ISVs, allows ISVs to remotely
manage and deliver their applications leveraging the Oracle On Demand Grid
as their technology infrastructure to seamlessly provide their customers
with on demand solutions that are secure, scalable, cost effective and easy
to manage.

- BERKELEY'S BOINC LETS HOME USERS JOIN CLIMATE PREDICTION GRID
- A new computing platform developed at the University of
California-Berkeley, called BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network
Computing), now lets users participate in many Internet computing projects
and tell their computers how much time to devote to each. The latest project
to move to BOINC is Climateprediction.net.
- U.S. SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING ENTERS NEW ERA WITH Grid3
- Grid3 uses the Internet to combine the computational resources of 26
universities and national laboratories across the United States to serve the
computing needs of more than 10 research groups in particle physics,
astrophysics, bioinformatics and computer science.
- SUN MICROSYSTEMS TO POWER PROVINCE-WIDE RESEARCH IN QUEBEC
- New data resulting from this research will contribute to the advancement
in knowledge and treatment of brain diseases, such as Parkinson's and
Alzheimer's disease, as well as other neurological and mental illnesses like
schizophrenia, depression and epilepsy.
- GridIron EXTENDS USE OF GRID FOR DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION
- In addition to faster preview processing, X-Factor 1.5 now speeds
rendering of the Adobe After Effects Render Queue, enables the use of large,
high-resolution digital video files on network drives and Storage Area
Networks, and supports the enhanced security features of Windows XP SP2.
- MERISANT SELECTS CORIO APPLICATIONS ON DEMAND
- Corio Inc, an enterprise application service provider, announced that
Merisant Company has chosen Corio Applications on Demand to support its
enterprise applications. Through the Corio Full Service delivery model,
Corio will provide infrastructure, application management and support
services.
