Tarantella Launches Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition 4

Tarantella launched its Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition 4 (EE 4) software. Shipping in the fourth quarter of 2004, EE 4 features support for new server platforms including SUSE Enterprise 9, Red Hat, Advanced Server 3, Fedora Core 2, as well as Solaris 10 from Sun.

"Secure Global Desktop is the platform of choice for secure remote access to applications in the Linux environment," said Steve Bannerman, chief marketing officer of Tarantella Inc. "Tarantella has demonstrated our commitment to the Linux market with over five years of mission-critical enterprise products. Secure Global Desktop EE 4 represents the next generation of that commitment. In addition to support for new distributions from major Linux vendors, EE 4 delivers the security, flexibility and unparalleled customer value that our Linux customers depend upon every day."

Additional features of Secure Global Desktop EE 4 include:

  • Enhanced security and encryption. Secure Global Desktop EE 4 includes support for SHA-1 and other bulk transfer encryption algorithms to meet even the most demanding security requirements.
  • Web services APIs allow for integration of Enterprise Edition 4 with portals and existing web applications. Secure Global Desktop EE 4 now offers a rich set of programming interfaces that allow customized access to enterprise applications, securely and remotely via EE 4, with one click from their existing portals.
  • Easier to use, more powerful user interface options. The client interface has been significantly revised and improved in EE 4. The new "webtop" is delivered as light-weight HTML, improving performance and browser compatibility. In addition, users can group applications into hierarchical lists, as well as end suspended sessions directly from a browser. The client user interface is built on EE 4's Web Services APIs and can be modified or completely replaced by the user.
  • Launch applications via a URL. Applications in Secure Global Desktop EE 4 are launched by standard URLs. This makes it easy to bookmark an application in your browser, or send a link to a co-worker in an e-mail message. One click from the user launches EE 4 and the application.
  • Configuration wizard. Administrators will welcome the new configuration wizard which walks the user through the initial setup and configuration of Secure Global Desktop EE 4.
  • Client drive mapping for additional clients. Secure Global Desktop EE 4's flexible client drive mapping system now allows Linux, Solaris, and Macintosh users to save data from their remote access session to their local disk drive.

Secure Global Desktop EE 4 is paired with Secure Global Desktop Terminal Services Edition 4 (TSE), the ultimate companion to Windows Terminal Services, to fill out Tarantella's new Secure Global Desktop family of products. Secure Global Desktop is the only remote access product family that meets all of the needs of today's agile enterprise and is the platform of choice for supporting secure access to the widest range of applications from the largest assortment of devices.
