Egenera Developing Processing Blade Based On Itanium 2 Processor
Egenera Inc announced that it recently began developing a two-way Egenera
Processing Blade configuration based on the Intel Itanium 2 processor.
"We believe the Itanium 2 processor brings the performance, standards and
volume economics of the Intel Architecture to the most data-intensive,
business-critical segments of enterprise computing," said Susan Davis, vice
president of product marketing and management at Egenera. "Our customers, many
of whom run critical database and transaction-processing applications on the
BladeFrame architecture, can benefit from the value of Itanium for these
services."
Davis continued, "Also significant, users will be able to combine Itanium 2
processor-based Processing Blades and Intel Xeon processor-based Processing
Blades within a single BladeFrame system. As datacenters increasingly adopt
utility computing, this capability is designed to ensure that resources are
routinely available to every application running on the Egenera platform."
"Itanium 2 processor-based platforms, such as the new Egenera Processing
Blade, enable end users to improve return on investment by delivering Intel's
industry-leading performance at generally lower cost than proprietary RISC
technologies," said Richard Dracott, general manager of enterprise marketing
and planning at Intel. "By giving customers access to both Itanium 2
processor- and Intel Xeon processor-based blades, Egenera can broaden the
range of applications supported by a BladeFrame utility computing model."
