U.S., EU MEET TO EXPLORE GRID EXPANSION INITIATIVES

Experts from the United States and the European Union recently met to discuss future exhanges of data- processing power worldwide.

The United States and the European Union are looking for ways to collaborate on projects such as national and regional research and education networks. Luis Rodrigez-Rosello, of the European Commission's Information Society DG, led an EU delegation of experts to discuss ways to propel Grid networking initiatives.

The European Union has already been working to spread Grid networking endeavors. Their high-speed research and education network, GEANT, is spreading to Asia, the Balkans, Latin America, the Mediterranean and Russia via the use of shared Grid resources.

The ALICE project will advance GEANT's network to Latin American countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Panama and Mexico on August 1 before spreading to Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay. African countries like Algeria and Tunisia have already joined the EUMEDconnect.

Grid research infrastructures, like that used with GEANT, help to expand projects worldwide with superior technology. The collaboration ensures cross- cultural innovation and creativity.
