GRIDBUS HEAD GETS StorageTek GRID FELLOWSHIP

The University of Melbourne and StorageTek have named Rajkumar Buyya, a preeminent Grid computing leader, the first StorageTek Fellow of Grid Computing.

The sponsorship deal between the Australian university and the United States-based data storage company provides Buyya with a $125,000 grant. The fellowship award will be used for joint research with StorageTek representatives into new storage technology.

Buyya currently heads the Grid Computing and Distributed Systems (GRIDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne's computer science department working as a senior lecturer.

The deal may mark the first time that a Grid computing commercial business has sponsored an academic organization. The GRIDS laboratory students and members of Gridbus, the lab's flagship project, will work with StorageTek to create and improve on next-generation Grid technology for academic and business applications.

The deal represents increased industry interest in the GRIDS lab research.

StorageTek could benefit from the deal if innovative new patents are developed at the lab. Though the deal only lasts for a year, continuation of the partnership really depends on the success of the developed technology.

StorageTek spoke with Buyya several times early last year about possible collaborations before a decision was made.
