Foundry Intros Family Of App Management/Layer 4-7 Web Appliances

Foundry Networks Inc announced a new series of high-availability Layer 4-7 application management and Web appliances for business-critical application and server farm infrastructures. The ServerIronGT E-series family includes the industry's first high-availability 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) application management appliance.

The E-series products enable users to build and deploy scalable, high-performance and robust application server farms with a comprehensive set of load balancing methods, in-depth network defense and intelligent and configurable content inspection and switching. The E-series protects the integrity and availability of mission-critical services and applications with a suite of network defense measures including extended access control lists, detection and mitigation of distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS), protection against viruses and worms, and policy-based security control for network-level SPAM mitigation.

The three E-series models are designed to address price-performance requirements across a range of enterprise and service provider environments. The new products combine the configuration convenience of an appliance with the high availability, port expandability and performance upgradeability of a modular switch. This flexibility is unique in the industry and allows customers to quickly adapt to traffic growth and network changes without costly and disruptive forklift upgrades.

The ServerIronGT E-series appliances feature Foundry's field-proven TrafficWorks embedded operating system that delivers advanced application intelligence, high-availability and robust application security. Additionally, the products integrate Foundry's innovative JetCore switching and packet processing technology to achieve high-performance hardware-based forwarding, denial of service protection and access control filtering.

The ServerIronGT E-series family includes three models:

  • ServerIronGT EGx2 -- Two Gigabit Ethernet ports, application processor with performance of up to 50,000 Layer 4 connections per second, two expansion slots.
  • ServerIronGT EGx4 -- Four Gigabit Ethernet ports, application processor with performance of up to 100,000 Layer 4 connections per second, two expansion slots.
  • ServerIronGT E10Gx2 -- Two 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports, application processor with performance of up to 150,000 Layer 4 connections per second, two expansion slots.

ServerIronGT E-series appliances feature front accessible and hot-swappable redundant power supplies (optional), management modules and line modules. The products are designed for maximum investment protection, allowing the user to add new ports and to double connection performance without field replacement. The ServerIronGT E-series can be deployed in a number of network configurations providing enterprise and service provider users a flexible and powerful solution for a wide range of server farm topologies.

"Scalable performance, service availability and robust security are critical to the success of our customers' application deployments," said Ken Cheng, vice president of marketing for Foundry. "The ServerIronGT E-series family leverages Foundry's core technologies and extensive experience in Layer 4-7 switching to provide users with a flexible, proven and cost-effective solution for building scalable, secure and intelligent application management infrastructure."
