Oki, BEA Deliver Converged IT, Telecommunications Platform

Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd and BEA Systems Inc announced the general availability of SipAs on WebLogic, the world's first product that is designed to converge IT and telecommunications on a single, unified technology platform. Leveraging the award-winning J2EE-based BEA WebLogic Server8.1, SipAs on WebLogic can help make it easier for customers to integrate enterprise applications and communications technologies, in order to more quickly bring new communications services to market. This product marks an important strategic milestone of the Oki Electric/BEA Systems alliance, which was formally announced in December 2003. As part of this global strategic alliance agreement, BEA and Oki plan to cooperate on joint sales and marketing activities for the new business application platform.

As the leading supplier of Internet Protocol (IP) phones in the Japanese market, Oki Electric has developed "AP@PLAT," a technology platform combining IT and telecommunications designed to create new value in business for customers. BEA Systems, also a leader within the telecommunications industry, has a rich heritage of building and deploying application infrastructure software used by thousands of customers worldwide. Together, Oki Electric and BEA Systems have collaborated in the area of Web solutions and jointly delivered a number of mission-critical IT solutions to the Japanese market. It is that solid collaboration, coupled with the companies' strength in Telecommunications and IT that has enabled the joint development of the world's first Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application server on J2EE.

"The convergence of IT and Telephony is top of mind for telecommunications customers today," said Tod Nielsen, executive vice president of products organization at BEA Systems. "With the release of SipAs on WebLogic, customers now have a scalable, reliable, 'carrier-class' technology platform upon which to build and deploy a new generation of services to help drive top-line revenue."

"With our strengths and abundant experience in telecommunications, we pride ourselves on bringing innovative communications solutions to the market," said Toshinao Takeuchi, president of NetBusiness Solutions Company at Oki Electric. "Through our partnership with BEA Systems, we can empower our customers to use IT as a competitive differentiator and help enable them to build a collection of innovative products and services that can be delivered more quickly to the market."

SipAs on WebLogic is the world's first SIP application server operating on an enterprise-class J2EE server. It combines Oki Electric's IP communications technology with BEA WebLogic Server 8.1. It is designed to enable users to build SIP-compatible communicating applications in the J2EE realm as a platform that can deliver service oriented architecture (SOA) in broadband/ubiquitous environments. Leveraging the properties of BEA WebLogic, with its proven track record as an enterprise-class J2EE server, SipAs on WebLogic will be the first Japanese product that supports "BEA WebLogic Workshop Control Validation Program.
