SAVVIS Features Virtualization, Utility Computing At SIA Conf.
At the Securities Industry Association (SIA) Technology Management Conference,
SAVVIS Communications, a global IT utility, showcased financial customers and
featured its recently launched end-to-end virtualized services delivery
platform. In addition, the company demonstrated marquee financial services
customer applications and discussed the Cable & Wireless America asset
acquisition which further expands its global presence by adding nearly 3,000
hosting and network services customers, many in the financial services
industry.
SAVVIS provided details on its new virtualized services delivery platform that
integrates network, hosting, storage and compute architectures to deliver
industry-first virtualized managed utility services. Unlike the traditional
service provider model, in which companies must pay for excess and unused
capacity, SAVVIS' virtualized delivery platform routinely and automatically
optimizes resource allocation for each client. The combination of on-demand
service with the increased reliability from SAVVIS' integration of carrier
class hardware and automated management systems is particularly well-suited
for the financial services industry. Additionally, it lessens the burden of
capital expenditures and provides a robust environment for legacy systems. As
a result, the platform increases a company's flexibility and agility, making
it possible to roll-out new applications, increase server and storage, and
expand the network in less time than conventional alternatives.
SAVVIS' virtualized utility services are made possible through technology
partnerships with Egenera, Inkra Networks, 3PAR and Nortel Networks, who
contribute key technologies that power the end-to-end platform. Employing a
utility model, the new platform enables SAVVIS' customers to eliminate
expensive hardware and gives them access to a secure, private and completely
"virtual" network and hosting infrastructure that cuts internal IT costs by as
much as 50 percent.
Each partner in the SAVVIS virtualized utility service offering brings a
specific part of the solution:
The Egenera BladeFrame system virtualizes data center infrastructure by
creating a pool of server resources from which private, secured configurations
can be dynamically allocated to support an application.
Inkra Networks' Virtual Service Switch centralizes network, security, and
performance services onto a single platform that simplifies the management and
improves the operation of the network.
3PAR InServ's advanced storage architecture underpins its highly
functional, virtualized Utility Storage solution to reduce the cost of
storage, restore agility to the storage environment and enable easy
information sharing.
Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN delivers virtual routing, security and
application service levels across the SAVVIS network backbone.
SAVVIS announced availability of the virtualized services delivery platform in
April and has already won more than a dozen virtualized utility services
contracts including several in the financial services industry.
"SAVVIS solutions were designed to meet the service levels and price points
demanded by the global financial markets," said Rob McCormick, chairman and
chief executive officer of SAVVIS. "As we have grown, we now offer a broad set
of IP services, including our industry leading virtualized utility services,
from which financial companies, large and small, can select the unique mix of
service components they need to empower their business."
