Sun Appoints John Fowler As EVP Of Network Systems

Sun Microsystems Inc, announced that John Fowler, 43, has been appointed executive vice president for Network Systems. This appointment is effective immediately. This new group is designed to strengthen Sun's position in the market for the industry standard network computing infrastructure. The Network Systems product line plans to leverage industry standard components, supply chains, and Sun's research and development to deliver the best price/performance, technically advanced solutions to customers leveraging the x86 instruction set.

"The market's move toward industry standard computing, storage and networking infrastructure, and the global adoption of these technologies throughout all sectors of industry and academia, represents a massive opportunity for Sun," said Jonathan Schwartz, president and chief operating officer of Sun Microsystems Inc. "John's history of driving disruptive innovation, and redefining conventional wisdom with Java and Solaris will serve him well in leading the evolution of our industry standard infrastructure business. Teaming with some of the best technology architects in the world, and paired with Sun's Scalable Systems group driving SPARC innovation, we've got the talent, perspective and resources to propel Sun's leadership in network computing innovation."

Fowler joined Sun Microsystems in 1990 and has steadily risen through the ranks. He was most recently the chief technology officer for Sun Microsystems' Software organization.

In his previous roles, Fowler was responsible for identifying leading trends in hardware and software -- and leading Sun's software investment strategies. He was actively involved in nearly all acquisitions that currently comprise the Network Systems team. Previously, he has led large engineering organizations in delivering core elements of network computing innovation, from desktops to servers, to the growing peer to peer movement and the evolution of network gaming.
