Developer Resources For IBM Power Architecture Now Available

IBM accelerated its plans to openly collaborate and build a community of innovation around its Power microprocessor architecture, unveiling dedicated developer resources for the Power Architecture at no-cost for customers, ISVs and IBM Business Partners.

The online resources include technical training, a collaborative Power Architecture portal, and software downloads for developers evaluating or including IBM middleware running on Linux and Power Architecture systems (IBM eServer iSeries and pSeries servers). Resources for other Power-based systems, such as the Macintosh Apple G5, are also provided.

"IBM is creating a platform for innovation that enables researchers and electronics makers to add the features and capabilities that will drive new devices and applications," said Gina Poole, vice president of IBM Web Communities and Developer Relations. "Development resources for the Power Architecture is intended to help developers propel application development by providing community support and direction for innovation and collaboration."

The Power Architecture is used to create chips for everything from game systems to PCs to servers to supercomputers, providing developers a broad platform of solutions upon which to deliver highly customizable applications based on Linux and IBM's middleware products.

The new developer resources include downloads, documents and trial software geared to help developers port and deploy their applications on Power-based chip designs. This includes a collaborative portal for the Power Architecture community which is the first step in building a broader community around the architecture. The portal provides a place for developers to find resources, and begin establishing a governance model to help guide future directions for innovation and collaboration.

It also includes a Power Architecture Pack which is a no-charge, downloadable evaluation kit that lets designers create custom Power chips in a simulation environment. It allows engineers to simulate a system-on-chip design based on their own intellectual property coupled with a Power processor.

Additional Power developer resources featuring 30 documents related to the architecture are available on developerWorks, including a developer's guide to the PowerPC microprocessor; an intro level article that provides an overview of the instruction set, important registers and other details necessary for developing reliable, high performance PowerPC applications and maintaining code compatibility among processors.
