Systems/Enterprise:
UNITED DEVICES UNVEILS DYNAMIC
GRID INFRASTRUCTURE SUITE
United Devices, a market leader in secure Grid solutions, announced the
availability of several new extensions to the Grid MP platform. These new
offerings stand to dramatically improve utilization and performance of new and
existing compute assets as well as deepen the company's penetration into
large, distributed enterprise computing.
"Increasingly, commercial enterprises are using Grid computing as a means of
securing significant competitive advantage through faster or more accurate
processing of appropriate applications, sharply reducing the costs of running
those applications, or both," said Carl Claunch, vice president of research at
Gartner. "Unlike the academic and public-sector scientific world, commercial
implementations of Grid are overwhelmingly done using software products from
young, innovative companies whose products power successful enterprise Grid
applications today."
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit

Grid computing is here!
The new dynamic Grid infrastructure suite includes:
- Grid MP Workstation - the leading solution for Windows-based enterprise
Grids.
Grid MP Cluster -- the first "Grid-Ready" Linux cluster management solution
that can readily expand to include heterogeneous, non-dedicated resources.
- Grid MP Data Center - a platform to maximize utilization of existing data
center assets.
MP Insight -- a data warehousing and business intelligence tool for all
enterprise compute resources.
United Devices, having pioneered wide area Grids, has connected thousands of
compute nodes for many of the world's top pharmaceutical, government,
university and industrial firms. This new suite represents a significant
expansion of these core Grid capabilities to virtually every corner of the
enterprise -- ultimately allowing customers to create a dynamic infrastructure
of processing power available on-demand to all enterprise constituents. For
example, Grid MP Cluster will leverage the inherent provisioning,
virtualization, security and unobtrusiveness features of the Grid MP platform
to power and extend high-performance Linux clusters to include non-dedicated
resources such as surrounding workstations, PCs, other clusters or even an
on-demand data center. The result is cluster management at a lower cost and
the ability to dynamically match the right application to the right
architecture -- whether within or outside the cluster. To simplify deployment
of United Devices' Grid MP Cluster solution, United Devices and
Hewlett-Packard (HP) are offering it as an option on the newly announced HP
High Performance Clusters LC Series.
"The United Devices Grid MP Cluster solution enhances the Grid readiness of
our LC clusters," said Winston Prather, vice president of High Performance
Technical Computing Division at HP. "This combination of traditional DRM and
Grid architecture will allow customers to increase the efficiency of both new
and existing compute assets."
HP's LC series clusters are integrated cluster solutions based on industry
standard HP ProLiant servers configured to meet the demanding needs of high
performance computing customers.
Another new capability, Grid MP Data Center, extends the power of Grid to data
center assets including resources based on Windows, Linux, Solaris and AIX.
As companies move to consolidate the number of servers throughout the
enterprise, Grid MP Data Center can ensure each remaining device is utilized
at 100 percent before investments in additional resources are made.
United Devices' new reporting package, MP Insight, builds on the basic report
capabilities in every Grid MP offering by providing robust data warehousing
and reporting features at an affordable price -- so Grid operators can access
critical utilization and performance data for benchmarking, capacity planning
and license management.
