SUN MICROSYSTEMS HONORED WITH GRID
AWARD
In a recent study, entitled "The Distributed Systems Market," Frost &
Sullivan
recognized Sun Microsystems Inc with the 2004 Excellence in Technology Award
for Grid computing. The award recognizes Sun's continuous innovation and
improvement in existing technologies that make it a leader in Grid computing
technology.
Grid computing is firmly established as the preferred model for numerically
intensive computing tasks such as financial risk assessment, genome
sequencing, geological modeling and performance simulation. Sun Grid Engine
Enterprise Edition, an N1 Grid System software product, is policy-based
service-oriented infrastructure to create, access and manage a Grid of
networked heterogeneous systems. Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition provides a
lower total cost of ownership and higher return on assets through improved
availability, uptime and throughput.
"Grid Engine technology has emerged to be world-class Grid enabling
software
for demanding research and commercial requirements alike," said Frost &
Sullivan research analyst Amreetha Vijayakumar. "From the open source Grid
Engine project through the highly capable Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition,
Sun has a solid product foundation for their Grid offerings. We're pleased to
recognize Sun's accomplishments with this award."
Grid Engine technology has been used to create thousands of Grids worldwide
for compute-intensive and commercial enterprise applications in organizations
such as Ford Motor, Mentor Graphics, Oxford Glycoscience, the Canadian
University Consortium HPCVL and the Tokyo University of Science. Sun engages
with its customers at three levels for the deployment of Grids, from providing
modular Grid-ready components such as Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition, to
customer collaborations using Sun Reference Architectures and Sun Customer
Ready Systems, to full service offerings provided by Sun Professional
Services.
"Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition is a key element in Sun's systems-based
strategy for datacenter automation because of the emergence of Grid computing
into the broader domain of enterprise computing," said David Nelson-Gal, Sun's
vice president of N1 Grid Systems. "The N1 Grid System, which provides the
core software services for establishing, partitioning, provisioning and
managing enterprise Grids, lets customers get the most out of existing
resources while automating previously costly and error-prone activities."
For its continuous innovation and improvement in existing technologies that
makes it a leader in Grid computing technology, Sun Microsystems is the
recipient of the 2004 Frost & Sullivan Award for Excellence in Technology.
Frost & Sullivan's 2003 Excellence In Technology Award
Frost & Sullivan presents this award each year to the company that has
pioneered the introduction of an innovative technology into the market, a
technology that is expected to bring significant contributions to the industry
in terms of adoption, change and competitive posture. It also recognizes the
overall technical excellence of a company and its commitment toward technology
innovation.
"We're honored to receive this award in recognition of Sun's efforts to
bring
Grid Everywhere," said Shahin Khan, vice president of High Performance and
Technical Computing at Sun. "Our open, solutions-oriented perspective to drive
adoption of Grid computing is exemplified in the Grid Engine open source
project and in Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition."
Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition is a core component of the Sun Grid
Solutions offerings targeting HPTC requirements for compute Grids, data Grids,
visualization Grids and access Grids. Sun partners with over 25 companies in
its HPTC Alliance Partner Program to deliver advanced optimized Grid
solutions. As the first commercial sponsor of the Global Grid Forum and a
founding member of the Enterprise Grid Alliance, Sun is an advocate and leader
in driving the development of Grid standards worldwide.
