IBM, MICROSOFT CONSPICUOUSLY
ABSENT FROM EGA
Although the newly forged Enterprise Grid Alliance has support from some of
the biggest names in the business, two major companies, IBM and Microsoft,
have yet to join, and analysts believe this could pose a problem.
It is not clear why the two companies are not EGA members, but some believe
that IBM and Microsoft are concentrating on furthering their own agendas in
the hot Grid market. This would not be surprising considering that IBM has
received criticism for its "iron grip" on any evolution in the Web services
market.
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit
www.gt04.com.
Grid computing is here!
Others, however, believe that the companies simply have not got around to
joining yet, and that they want more information (and more courting) before
actually signing up. The EGA a serious group, after all, and IBM and Microsoft
will probably join, these analysts think -- it is just a matter of when.
EGA president Donald Deutsch said that he has been in contact with IBM in
an
attempt to persuade the company to join. So far, he has been unsuccessful.
Microsoft has also been contacted.
It might suit any company that wishes to have a stake in the Grid market to
join the EGA, however, as the market is expected to have a major impact in the
enterprise world within the next few years.
