Systems/Enterprise:
VERITAS, BEA DELIVER OPEN UTILITY
PLATFORM FOR ENTERPRISE APPS
VERITAS Software Corp and BEA Systems Inc, a leading application
infrastructure software company, announced a global strategic alliance aimed
at helping customers deploy enterprise applications on the first open,
heterogeneous utility computing platform. The two companies plan to provide an
integrated offering and engage in joint development, sales and marketing
activities.
The joint offering is slated to include versions of VERITAS Indepth for
J2EE
application performance management software, VERITAS Cluster Server high
availability solution and VERITAS OpForce server provisioning software
integrated with BEA WebLogic and Tuxedo platforms. And because both BEA and
VERITAS are independent software providers, the integrated offerings are
designed to work with all major operating systems, hardware and enterprise
applications.
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit

"Until now, deploying an integrated applications platform built on a
utility
computing infrastructure required a single vendor, hardware and software
lock-in," said William P. Hurley, senior analyst with Enterprise Application
Group. "This alliance will provide a compelling alternative for customers by
allowing existing heterogeneous hardware and software investments to form the
foundation of a fully integrated utility computing infrastructure."
As organizations increasingly deploy reusable application services to
automate
critical business functions, consistently delivering high IT service levels
becomes paramount to business success. Integrating BEA's service-oriented
infrastructure with VERITAS' utility computing software building blocks, the
joint offering is intended to allow for increased re-usability of application
services, increased application performance and availability, greater IT
adaptability to business changes and simplified IT management -- which may
ultimately result in reduced operation costs.
"VERITAS and BEA are working together to help customers ensure that
applications are available whenever users need them, that they process
critical information quickly and can rapidly scale to meet changing business
demands," said Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations at
VERITAS Software. "Bringing together BEA and VERITAS, two of the world's
leading independent software companies, is a major milestone for the delivery
of open, heterogeneous utility computing solutions as the foundation for
business applications."
"While enterprises struggle to bring their operations costs down, demands
on
IT to serve more users with greater agility is going up," said Tod Nielsen,
executive vice president of BEA Systems. "We have expanded our relationship
with VERITAS to respond to the challenges of our customers' computing demands
to help ensure that their applications are provisioned to take advantage of
their available resources, at a lower cost, in order to responsively meet
business demand."
BEA And VERITAS Integrated Offering
The BEA WebLogic Platform provides a robust, standards-based, scalable
infrastructure for the development and deployment of enterprise applications.
VERITAS provides a building block approach to utility computing, with
integrated software offerings that can enable IT to align with changing
business requirements. By evolving to a utility computing model using VERITAS'
building block approach, customers can optimize their existing IT
infrastructure to meet required service levels while helping to lower the cost
of operation and management.
Application Performance: VERITAS Indepth For J2EE -- WebLogic Server
The companies have integrated VERITAS Indepth for J2EE with BEA WebLogic
Server to help optimize the performance of WebLogic-based applications,
helping customers achieve maximum productivity by proactively managing the
performance of applications -- from development through production deployment.
The offering is designed to enable administrators to automatically identify
performance problems and generate recommendations on corrective actions while
the application is running and before the customer's business is impacted.
High Availability: VERITAS Cluster Server For WebLogic Server
The companies have integrated VERITAS Cluster Server with BEA WebLogic
Server
to help ensure that applications are highly available, easy to manage and
perform optimally by running the WebLogic and Tuxedo platforms in a clustered
server environment. The offering simplifies capacity and performance planning,
while protecting against application failure, both locally and site-wide.
Server Provisioning: VERITAS OpForce For WebLogic Server
The companies plan to integrate VERITAS OpForce software with BEA WebLogic
Server to help simplify and automate the process of deploying, provisioning
and managing multiple WebLogic servers. With VERITAS OpForce for WebLogic
Server, administrators can quickly discover available servers, prepare them
for deployment and provision them to areas of critical need in running
applications on the network -- all via a remote Web interface. The offering
will be designed to automate the time-consuming, repetitive and mundane tasks
of provisioning and deploying servers, whether for a planned build or
responding to peak activity that requires additional application server
resources.
