ISS Proventia Appliances Offer Gigabit Performance

Internet Security Systems Inc announced the availability of new Proventia intrusion prevention appliances offering gigabit performance. Designed specifically for high-bandwidth, high-capacity networking environments, the Proventia G1000 and G1000F appliances block Internet threats before they negatively impact an organization.

The Proventia G1000 and G1000F offer preemptive protection against known and unknown attacks, preserving network uptime, improving productivity and preventing embarrassing security breaches. More organizations are adopting intrusion prevention products to actually block attacks instead of simply detecting them. Blocking attacks reduces the strain on IT resources who have to analyze events from intrusion detection systems and then coordinate the appropriate response.

Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. "Intrusion prevention technology has advanced considerably and more businesses are gaining efficiency and value from products that sit in-line on the network and accurately prevent attacks," said Greg Adams, vice president of product management at ISS. "ISS was the first to offer an intrusion prevention system several years ago and we've seen the interest in this technology increase over the years. Now we're bringing the Proventia G1000 or G1000F to market to prevent attacks on the most demanding networks."

Unlike other intrusion prevention products available today, Proventia protects against vulnerabilities, the weak spots targeted by Internet attacks. When a vulnerability is discovered, ISS' security research team updates Proventia to immediately protect against attacks targeting that weak spot. ISS' preemptive approach keeps organizations protected ahead of the next threat, alleviating the need to patch vulnerable systems during an emergency or when inconvenient -- which can be costly and risky. Because of its focus on protecting vulnerabilities, ISS preemptively protected against all of the last four major attacks -- MS Blaster, SQL Slammer, Nimda and Code Red.

Proventia intrusion prevention appliances are simple to deploy with three flexible modes of operation (protection, passive and simulation) allowing customers to easily switch from detection to prevention without disrupting network traffic. The simulation mode is particularly helpful for organizations that want to ease into prevention. Simulation mode reports which traffic the appliance would have blocked so that customers can evaluate effectiveness before applying prevention. Proventia offers high reliability with a built-in bypass feature that allows traffic to pass in the event of a power loss.

According to IDC's annual market share report Worldwide Intrusion Detection and Prevention Forecast Update and Analysis, 2003-2007 (IDC# 30546), dated December 2003, Internet Security Systems was recognized as the worldwide market leader in the intrusion detection and prevention (ID&P) software market for the fourth consecutive year, garnering more than 33 percent of the entire ID&P market and 54 percent more revenue than its nearest competitor.
