SUN OFFERS PUBLIC ACCESS RELEASE
OF JAVA STUDIO CREATOR TOOL
Sun Microsystems Inc, the creator of Java technology, announced the Early
Access release of its groundbreaking visual development environment, the Sun
Java Studio Creator application development tool. Over the last four months,
more than 100 developers have participated in the technology preview releases
of the product, contributing essential feedback on ease of use and developer
productivity. In a staggering indication of the excitement being generated by
the product, more than 10,000 developers have already signed up for the Early
Access release, which will be available on April 8 at
www.sun.com/jscreator.
Java Studio Creator is a comprehensive develop/debug/deploy solution out of
the box, incorporating the first release of production JavaServer Faces (JSF)
technology, providing greater performance and coding efficiency. The product
also includes:
- the Java Enterprise System runtime to allow developers to quickly
evaluate
applications in pre-production, including the Sun Java System Application
Server, Platform Edition.
- PointBase, an SQL database server (included with the Java System
Application Server).
- the Java 2, Standard Edition (J2SE) Platform Software Development Kit
(SDK).
- developer aids such as examples, tutorials, JavaServer Faces visual
components and more.
Seamlessly integrating tools, runtimes and components, the Java Studio
Creator
tool makes Java coding visual and efficient, enabling developers to focus on
application value-add such as user interaction and business logic, instead of
system infrastructure and Web services plumbing.
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit

"The largest segment of the developer community has relied on visual
development as the means to rapidly create solutions for the Web and the
enterprise," said Richard Green, vice president of the Developer Platforms
Group at Sun Microsystems. "At the same time, the Java technology platform has
been the choice for developers creating network, desktop and mobile
applications by providing an open, end-to-end, high-performance technology
platform, as well as a competitive business model. Java Studio Creator brings
these two worlds together, enabling the largest single community of developers
to move to Java technology."
The Java Studio Creator tool is entirely based on Java platform and
technology
standards developed through the Java Community Process (JCP), helping to
ensure application portability between deployment environments and development
tools, including the Sun Java Studio Enterprise development solution. Further,
developers can use Java Studio Creator to leverage the advanced services
created with Java Studio Enterprise and other enterprise-class tools. And,
like all of the Sun Java Studio tools, Java Studio Creator is based on the
NetBeans open source platform. With this Early Access release, the Java Studio
Creator tool has been moved to NetBeans version 3.6, which adds stronger
JavaServer Pages syntax support in the code editor, improved code completion
and an enhanced debugger. With Java and NetBeans as the foundation
technologies, the product line enables developers to prototype quickly and
easily using the Java Studio Creator tool, then move up to Java Studio
Enterprise to extend application functionality.
Commitment To The Latest Java Technologies
Java Studio Creator takes full advantage of new ease-of-use innovations and
provides a standards-based environment, freeing developers from the
limitations of proprietary languages, technologies and runtimes.
The Java Studio Creator tool incorporates JavaServer Faces technology, the
recently released framework standard also known as Java Specification Request
(JSR) 127 in the JCP services. JavaServer Faces technology simplifies
development of visual, multi-tier applications which helps to speed coding
behind the user interface. Using JavaServer Faces technology, the Java Studio
Creator tool supports two-tier Web applications that conform to the Java
BluePrints design patterns, accessing databases and Web services behind
dynamic HTML interfaces.
In addition, Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) RowSet (JSR 114) technology
simplifies and streamlines access to databases. The Java Studio Creator tool's
use of this technology boosts productivity by minimizing coding complexity for
connecting to databases and performing queries against them.
Other standards supported in the Java Studio Creator tool include
JavaServer
Pages, Java XML Pack software and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE)
1.3 and 1.4 Web container support.
Partner Program Picks Up The Pace
With the availability of the Early Access release, Sun is also stepping up
its
outreach to partners, who will provide a key competitive element in the Java
Studio Creator tool's overall success. Recognizing that visual developers
expect access to a wide variety of both out-of-the-box and third party
components for maximum productivity, Sun is working with market leaders in the
visual component space to give developers access to the widest variety of
application functionality based on the adoption of the JavaServer Faces
standard.
"The JavaServer Faces specification and the Java Studio Creator product
promise to provide developers with the ability to create more visually-rich
applications," said Patrick Megard, director of the visualization product line
for ILOG. "ILOG has been actively engaged with the JSF specification and Sun
Java Studio Creator. The Early Access release of Sun Java Studio Creator is a
milestone in making the power of Java component technology available to the
majority of developers."
Platform Support And Availability
Sun's tools are designed to help developers be more productive by allowing
them to defer specific deployment platform choices. Java Studio Creator is
slated to support the Solaris Operating System, Linux and Windows when the
tool becomes generally available in Summer 2004. Pricing has not been
determined. For more information on Sun's developer product lines, please see
