GAME GRID COMPANY RAISES $10
MILLION TO EXPAND SERVICES
Butterfly.net, an IBM-backed company aimed at creating an on-demand
computing
infrastructure for running online games, said it has received another $10
million in funding from supporters including networking equipment giant Cisco
Systems.
"This funding signals a new era for gamers that offers the world's most
creative talent a high-performance online platform to develop new forms of
interactive entertainment," said Butterfly. net Chief Executive Officer David
Levine.
Butterfly.net was launched two years ago to apply Grid computing techniques
to
the challenging business of running multi-player online games.
The company's flagship product, the Butterfly Grid, allocates computing and
network resources to the most populous game worlds and popular games.
Grid games provide faster action, smarter artificial intelligence, larger
communities, richer worlds and deeper interactivity than previously
possible.
"We see Butterfly.net as a natural extension of our investments in the
infrastructure space, amplified by a new emphasis on global media
technologies," said Allon Bloch, the principal of JVP, a company which led the
new round of investment in Butterfly.net.
By drastically reducing the costs associated with the development, launch
and
ongoing operations of large-scale online games, Butterfly.net is enabling a
greater variety and depth of game-play, robust service offerings and
innovative subscription programs, a company statement issued in Los Angeles
said.
Butterfly.net also said its Grid is designed to meet the most important
demands of the gaming community, including reliability, scalability, security,
variety, performance and efficiency.
