SEAGULL EXPANDS MAINFRAME
INTEGRATION OPTIONS WITH VIASERV
Seagull Software, a leading provider of legacy-aware application
development
technologies, and Viaserv, an innovative developer of mainframe data access
middleware, announced a strategic partnership under which Viaserv's ViaSQL
products for direct access to mainframe data sources have been added to the
LegaSuite platform of legacy liberation solutions. The ViaSQL product line,
which will be marketed by Seagull Software worldwide as LegaSuite products,
offers direct SQL access to both relational and non-relational data sources
for z/OS, OS/390 and VSE environments, including DB2, VSAM, SQL/DS, IMS, DL/1,
IDMS, Datacom, Adabas, Sequential and more.
"With ViaSQL, LegaSuite now supports legacy access at all three points in
the
application stack -- screen, transaction and database," said Don Addington,
Seagull Software CEO and president. "Our customers trust the LegaSuite brand,
which is proven in production environments such as online banking, kiosk bill
payment and call centers around the world. We continue to expand the
capabilities of the LegaSuite platform in direct response to our customers
demand for a single-source legacy liberation vendor that can deliver scalable,
cost-effective legacy integration for any enterprise architecture."
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit

Like all LegaSuite products, ViaSQL is designed for fast and easy
implementation that requires little or no programming. "Hand-coded connectors
are crippling enterprise IT resources and schedules -- at build time and, more
importantly, at maintenance time," commented Don Addington. "When you let
LegaSuite do the work, you not only eliminate those risks, you eliminate a new
generation of hard-coded stovepipes."
ViaSQL includes a sophisticated mapping tool that quickly and easily
transforms non-relational OS/390 and VSE data sources such as VSAM and IMS
into a defined relational format. ViaSQL can also use existing COBOL copybooks
to automatically perform the relational mapping. From an application's point
of view, the data appears as though it came from a relational DBMS. For JDBC
and ODBC scenarios, ViaSQL can be used on a stand- alone basis. In composite
application development scenarios, ViaSQL serves as a database connector to
LegaSuite where, with no programming, it can be transformed into a Web service
or expose an XML, J2EE or .NET interface.
The combination of LegaSuite and ViaSQL provides developers with an
efficient
means of integrating host data that is not accessible from a single
transaction or screen; transforming host data into SOA-enabled business
resources. As with all LegaSuite solutions, ViaSQL has scalability and
performance characteristics to support the most demanding transaction
loads.
"An enterprises' need for information often stretches beyond the database,"
said Bill Coleman, Viaserv's vice president and co-founder. "The addition of
ViaSQL products to the LegaSuite platform of legacy liberation technologies
gives developers access to data and application logic through a single,
transparent interface layer for streamlined development. For composite
application development, LegaSuite now covers a really broad spectrum of host
environments and application stack access points."
