SUN ANNOUNCES AGGRESSIVE DEVELOPER
PROMOTION
Sun Microsystems Inc, the creator and leading advocate of Java technology,
announced the Java Enterprise Developer Promotion for the Sun Developer
Network community. The promotion includes a free AMD Opteron-based server plus
extensive tools, support and services to develop and test enterprise
applications. This announcement marks the first time Sun developers have been
able to get hardware, software and development tools from a leading systems
vendor for a single, low annual subscription fee. Sun also announced the next
version of the Sun Java Enterprise System, 2004Q2. This new release enhances
the availability, communications and collaboration, portal and identity
management capabilities of the Java Enterprise System and expands the platform
to include support for Linux and enable secure mobile access.
The Java Enterprise Developer Promotion is available to Sun Developer
Network
(SDN) program members. This exclusive, U.S. only promotion, is available at
the low subscription price of $1,499 per year for three years. The Java
Enterprise Developer Promotion combines Sun's premier Java and Solaris tools
with Sun's latest, entry-level Opteron-based server. This represents a huge
savings to the Java technology developer community and emphasizes Sun's system
level focus on high-value, low-cost Web Services development. The promotion
begins today and runs through June 30, 2004. Full details on the promotion are
available at www.sun.com/developers.
Web services, utility computing, .NET, CPU harvesting and distributed
computing are just a few of the technologies that fall under the Grid
computing umbrella. Gt04 -- a premiere enterprise Grid computing conference
targeting industrial and commercial users -- will gather experts, and outline
strategies and road maps for Grid deployment. For more information, visit

Grid computing is here!
"This is the first time a free server has been offered as part of a
developer
subscription program. This approach is similar to the mobile phone industry
that provides a cell phone as part of the cellular subscription," said
Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "The Java
Enterprise Developer Promotion shows we are razor focused on providing
developers the best tools and platforms possible."
The following hardware and software are included in the special Java
Enterprise Developer Promotion:
- Sun Java Studio Enterprise: a complete development platform for
creating,
testing and deploying applications for the Java Enterprise System.
- Sun Studio: a powerful, easy-to-use, Integrated Development Environment
(IDE) to create and test C, C++ and Fortran applications. Solaris 9 Operating
System for x86 Platform: the premiere operating system for security,
manageability and performance.
- Sun Fire V20z Server: delivering on Sun's November 2003 announcement of
a
strategic alliance with AMD, this Sun Fire system, driven by the Opteron
processor, runs 32-bit and 64-bit applications on Solaris and Linux operating
environments for "scaling out" network computers.
- Support Services: includes next day, on-site support for hardware,
software
updates and upgrades and more.
- Developer monitored online forums, email-based technical support,
access
to
Sun's knowledge base, privileges to submit bug fixes, 90-day installation
support and software updates.
The Java Enterprise System 2004Q2, scheduled to be available next quarter,
will include the following:
- Increased platform support -- In addition to running on Solaris/SPARC
and
Solaris x86 architecture based-systems, the Java Enterprise System is
scheduled to run on Red Hat Linux. The company will be supporting additional
operating systems platforms in calendar year 2004 and will provide additional
details throughout the year.
- Availability Services -- Full-scale support across multiple platforms
with
inclusion of Sun Cluster 3.1 4/04 software, the latest version that extends
mission critical, high availability to the Solaris Operating System x86 as
well as Solaris/SPARC platforms as part of the Java Enterprise System. Sun
Cluster 3.1 4/04 software is key to building a highly available SunPlex
System, an application service level management environment that ties Sun
Servers, storage, interconnects, the Solaris Operating System and applications
together into a highly available environment within which applications can
continue to provide service to clients despite failures in the hardware or
software.
- Portal Services -- Sun is radically simplifying secure access to
services
and applications anytime, anywhere, from any device. New Portal Services in
this release focus on standards, scalability, ease-of-use, interoperability
and new platform support. Portal Services include community creation,
aggregation and presentation, personalization, multi-channel access and
knowledge management. Key among the many new features are: Web Services Remote
Portlet Support (WSRP), the latest portal standard which provides portal
service delivery between multiple portal implementations; auto identification,
classification and delivery of content and documents based on personalized
interest profiles; enhanced Secure SSL-VPN portal access enabling secure drag
and drop access to file and documents; "proxylet" support and additional
hardware acceleration driving higher performance; and Mobile Access that
provides mobile and voice-based portal access to hundreds of mobile and
wireless devices. All available on Sun Java System Application Server 7 EE,
BEA Weblogic 8.1 and IBM Websphere 5.1
- Communications and Collaboration Services -- Sun is taking productivity
to
the next level quickly and affordably by accelerating enterprise decision
making. Communication and Collaboration services include mail, instant
messaging, alerts, group and individual resource scheduling, presence and
multi-client support. New features include: an integrated web client that
delivers access to mail, calendar and address book in unprecedented
ease-of-use in Sun Java System Communications Express 6; seamless Microsoft
Outlook client interoperability can allow enterprises to realize the radical
cost savings of the Java Enterprise System without costly retraining of the
end user with the Sun Java System Connector for Microsoft Outlook; and a
single repository for users' contacts across all means of communication and
collaboration with integrated address book support.
- Identity Services -- Java System Identity Server supports Liberty Phase
2
specifications that enable the deployment and adoption of secure and federated
identity-based web services to fixed and mobile devices. This release also
supports Java Card authentication and single sign-on between web applications
and Microsoft Windows desktop infrastructures.
- Web Enablement Services -- Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 delivers
built-
in web security with unmatched reliability for all types of web applications
and is the web server of choice for Fortune 1000 companies. In addition to the
new platform support of the Java Enterprise System, the Sun Java System Web
Server 6.1 is expanding its support to Trusted Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise
Linux AS 3, Microsoft Windows 2003, HP-UX 11i and AIX 5.1/5.2.
- Java Application and Web Services -- Building on Sun's recent
leadership,
highly available Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Application
Services, and high performance Java Web Services, the Sun Java System
Application Server provides the core J2EE platform runtime and Java Web
Services engine for Sun's Java Enterprise System. The Sun Java System
Application Server 7.1 will extend its lead in high availability by offering
complete J2EE specification failover mechanisms that can deliver five 9s of
availability across both the Solaris and Linux operating environments. The Sun
Java System Application Server also includes market leading performance of
messaging with its Java Message Service implementation.
Sun also announced updates to its software products -- the N1 Grid and
Solaris
10 operating system -- that will work seamlessly with Sun's new Sun Fire
E2900-E25K servers. This container technology is supported in the Solaris 9 OS
and will be supported in Solaris 10, the upcoming version of Sun's operating
system. To further enable customers to reduce cost and complexity, Sun is
offering an enhanced pricing strategy for its N1 Grid Service Provisioning
System. This new pricing structure will help save customers money and enable
them to have access to upgrades and technical support throughout the year.
