Procket Release Enables Wire-Speed, Reliable IP Services

Procket Networks, a leading provider of high performance Internet Protocol (IP) routers, announced significant new performance and feature enhancements to its PRO/8801 and PRO/8812 routing platforms, including new capabilities in system management, network security, and system availability. PRO/1 Modular Service Environment Release 2.3, available immediately, allows network operators to deploy QoS, MPLS Layer 2 VPN, and comprehensive IPv6-based services.

The unique design of Procket's PRO/1 software enables each routing protocol to run independently, allowing memory protection for unmatched stability and uptime for services. This separates the PRO/8000 series routers from incumbent core router offerings. Procket has proven in customer networks and third-party testing to provide high performance routing and new services/features with superior reliability to the incumbents.

Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of technologies that allow packets to be classified, policed, (re)marked, shaped and prioritized. These capabilities in turn allow users to offer multiple services requiring varying degrees of delay, jitter, loss and bandwidth guarantees over a common network infrastructure. Sample services requiring QoS include VOIP (Voice over IP), VOD (Video on Demand), and Internet gaming. Procket's QoS implementation does not affect wire-speed forwarding performance.

A Layer 2 MPLS VPN provides a way to emulate existing telecommunications services (such as Frame-Relay, ATM, and TDM) over packet-switched networks, as well as point-to-point Ethernet service. In Release 2.3, Ethernet and Ethernet VLAN pseudo wires are supported.

With Release 2.3, PRO/8000 series routers support comprehensive IPv6 routing protocols, including static routing, OSPFv3, IS-IS for IPv6, BGP4 for IPv6, and RIPng, hence allowing users to build larger and more reliable IPv6 networks.

In addition to these enhancements, the PRO/1 Modular Service Environment now offers a number of other significant features, including:

  • Fast-Reroute enhancement
  • Hardware support for Bidirectional PIM ("Bi-Dir PIM")
  • BGP soft-reconfiguration inbound
  • File commit candidate-configuration confirmed < minutes
  • Encrypting Username Passwords
