AKAMAI, EQUINIX TO EXPAND CONTENT
DELIVERY IN U.S., ASIA
Equinix Inc, a leading provider of network-neutral data centers and
Internet
exchange services, announced that Akamai Technologies Inc has teamed with
Equinix to expand its content and applications delivery platform in the United
States and Asia.
Akamai operates the world's largest, globally-distributed computing
platform,
making the Internet predictable, scalable and secure for conducting profitable
e-business. The company's intelligent edge platform for content, streaming
media and applications delivery comprises more than 14,000 servers in more
than 1,100 networks in over 70 countries.
In addition to directly connecting to networks within Equinix's Internet
hubs
via private cross-connects, Akamai will utilize Equinix's GigE Exchange
service in the Washington, D.C., and Silicon Valley-area centers. By using
this service, Akamai can streamline its network connectivity by linking to the
concentration of networks operating within Equinix's centers, including every
major global network, via an efficient central switching fabric. The service
significantly lowers the costs of traditional data exchange arrangements by
reaching partners, including key broadband networks, international carriers
and content companies, within a single, centralized and neutral environment
rather than by establishing point-to-point communications with partners in
multiple, disparate locations.
"A solid infrastructure of network connectivity is essential for the
operation
of Akamai's distributed computing services," said Peter Papavasiliou, director
of network infrastructure for Akamai. "Equinix is unique in providing a high
performance center with immediate proximity to leading networks, carriers and
ISPs. In addition, Akamai contributes in making the Equinix peering fabrics
even more valuable by bringing massive amounts of mission-critical content to
the network access point (NAP)."
"Companies, such as Akamai, have found Equinix to be strategically
important
in providing a connectivity and colocation infrastructure to accommodate their
global expansion plans," said Peter Van Camp, CEO of Equinix. "Their need to
reach the world's most important networks in both the U.S. and Asia make
Equinix a critical component in Akamai's network infrastructure."
