JAPANESE INFRASTRUCTURE PROVIDER
TO ADOPT DELL SERVER BLADES
Dell Japan has announced Dell PowerEdge 1655MC server blades will be
adopted
as the hardware platform for a broadband solution, based on Grid computing.
The solution involves the integration of systems within the SOFTBANK group,
while providing a hosting service for applications offered by SOFTBANK BB
running Oracle Database 10g. The Dell PowerEdge servers will run Oracle 10g
software to enable Grid computing for the project, which is currently being
designed, and is expected to lead to the creation of one of the largest data
centers in the world.
Infrastructure Overview
The integrated system used by the SOFTBANK group consists of Dell PowerEdge
1655MCs running Oracle Database 10g, with plans to add servers as more
services are offered. Each server blade will include two processors and a
Linux operating system.
The compact design of the Dell server blades enables customers to deploy
the
servers in half the amount of rack space compared to traditional 1U servers.
In addition, the installation of empty server blade enclosures as part of the
initial system installation will allow Softbank BB to quickly expand the
system, simply by inserting blades, as needed to accommodate an increase in
the number of users of its services or an expansion of service content.
SOFTBANK Decision To Adopt Dell Server Blades
SOFTBANK group has previously used many Dell server and storage products,
including the PowerEdge 1655MC, as part of its broadband solutions hardware
platform. The company has been very impressed with Dell's product performance,
reliability, price performance and services.
The Dell-Oracle global partnership was also an important factor leading to
the
adoption of Dell's server blades by SOFTBANK BB. Dell and Oracle established
cooperative sales and support systems in Japan in September.
