Storage:
NetApp Takes Scalability,
Performance To New Heights
Network Appliance Inc, a leading provider of enterprise network storage
solutions, announced the newest members of its FAS900 platform, the FAS980 and
the clustered FAS980c. Architected with full unified storage features,
including both file and block capabilities, the new systems offer greater
capacity, higher scalability, and dramatic performance enhancements. The
NetApp FAS980 and FAS980c extend the Network Appliance solutions portfolio to
help customers deploy mission-critical applications on a highly scalable,
high-performance platform, while meeting their demands for simple, easy to
manage solutions that help them consolidate their data infrastructure,
regardless of SAN or NAS distinctions.
The FAS980 was designed from the ground up to handle today's sophisticated,
data-intensive database and layered applications for customer relationship
management and enterprise resource planning (ERP) that are mission and
business critical for the world's largest enterprises. The FAS980 also offers
robust, reliable storage that can be easily managed in a large data
infrastructure for a variety of other applications, including e-mail, CAD/CAM,
and document and file management.
"The newest additions to the NetApp FAS900 series, the FAS980 and FAS980c,
extend its unified storage systems further into the high-end," said Steve
Kenniston, senior analyst with the Enterprise Storage Group. "With the
increased performance and capacity scaling, these systems help enterprises
meet the requirements for fast, reliable access to mission-critical data and
high-performance application storage."
"Our customers have told us that they want more powerful and larger
capacity
storage solutions that maintain and extend our simplicity and reliability,"
said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance.
"These new systems take our customers to the highest levels of performance and
scalability for their demanding information and data management
infrastructures."
The NetApp FAS980 and FAS980c run the newly announced Data ONTAP 6.5
operating
system and offer file access for NFS and CIFS using GbE and DAFS, as well as
block access over Fibre Channel Protocol and iSCSI. Their highly scalable
architecture supports capacities up to 64TB (clustered systems) and 32TB
(single systems). The NetApp FAS980 and FAS980c deliver nearly 45 percent
greater throughput than the industry-leading NetApp FAS960 and FAS960c while
improving responsiveness to applications, based on SPECsfs97_R1.v3 benchmark
results. NetApp continues to lead the industry in providing customers with
enterprise storage systems that deliver the optimal performance combination of
high throughput and fast response times.
