Intel To Ship "Prescott" Chip By
End Of 2003
Intel has promised to ship its 4GHz Pentium 4 "Prescott" chip by the end of
2004, and the company expects the Prescott to account for 60 percent of its
desktop CPU shipments by the second quarter of the fiscal year.
Also underway are plans to ship 90nm Celerons, based on the same core as
the
Prescott, in the second quarter.
Prescott is expected to reach 4GHz in the fourth quarter, with 3.6GHz and
3.8GHz versions arriving in in the second and third quarters, respectively.
The current 130nm "Northwood" Pentium 4s are expected to hang around until the
third quarter, and by the fourth quarter, Intel will only be offering 90nm
versions, though there will still be Northwood-based Celerons offered.
Intel also expects to ship plenty more mobile processors next year. The
company's Centrino platform accounts for 42 percent of the mobile PC
market.
IDC also expects Centrino gain a greater market share during the current
and
next quarter on the back of increased demand for Wi-Fi enabled devices.
