Security:
Several Linux Servers
Compromised
A hacker compromised several key Linux distribution servers last week.
Belonging to the Debian Project, the compromised servers include: bug
tracking, mail list, Web server and security components servers. Debian
officials say the code for its Linux distribution was unchanged.
Apparently, the hacker was interested in Debian's latest Linux release,
which
is due this week. The attack is similar to those on Microsoft servers by
hackers interested in obtaining the Windows source code.
The Debian attack isn't the first time this year an open source stalwart's
infrastructure has been hacked. Richard Stallman's Free Software Foundation
was hacked in March, though the attack wasn't discovered until months later.
This time, at least, the attack was noticed quickly.
