ServGate Introduces Gigabit
Integrated Security Appliance
ServGate Technologies announced the release of the EdgeForce Accel, the
latest
addition to its EdgeForce series of modular, scalable, multifunction security
appliances. The Accel is the first product in its category to offer Gigabit
capacity for virus scanning, intrusion detection, Web caching and Web
filtering as well as firewall and VPN functionality, making the benefits of
the EdgeForce platform available to larger enterprises.
The new appliance extends ServGate's strategy of integrating multiple
security
services in a single box in order to reduce the costs and network complexities
associated with sourcing, implementing and maintaining multiple security
applications from multiple vendors. The Accel and all products in the
EdgeForce line are architected to support the addition of future services,
eliminating the need to replace the appliance as new security solutions
emerge.
"Our new Accel security gateway couples the performance required for
central
office use with a broad suite of filtering services that can be integrated
with the base unit to consolidate the provisioning, administration and
enforcement of network security on a single edge-based device," said Dario
Zamarian, ServGate vice president of products and corporate strategy. "Our
EdgeForce integrated security platform simplifies the process of protecting
enterprise networks from external threats and reduces the total cost of
ownership through centralized device configuration and management."
The base Accel system shi per second with a 250 Mb per second firewall, 90
Mb
per second VPN capabilities with support for up to 1,000 IPSec 3DES tunnels,
and three integrated auto-sensing 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports. These features
make the Accel useful for mid-sized businesses, distributed enterprises and
regional ISPs that need to deploy a very fast firewall at a low price point,
backhaul VPN traffic from multiple sites to a central location, support
Gigabit Ethernet networks, and provide a full suite of filtering
capabilities.
Through the use of easily deployed license keys, network managers can add
extra horsepower and new security services to the base unit, either on initial
deployment or at a later date. This approach permits pay-as-you-grow
deployment, eliminates disruptive client and server equipment upgrades, and
extends the life of the investment.
An optional Performance Module boosts the Accel's firewall throughput to 1
Gb
per second, increases VPN throughput to 280 Mb per second, doubles the number
of VPN tunnels supported to 2,000, and provides automatic failover when a
second Accel is deployed. Also available are an Anti-Virus Module providing
McAfee edge-based virus scanning directly on the appliance; and a Professional
Module providing an 80GB hard drive for Web content caching, local logging,
and Web filtering utilizing WebSense and/or local URL filtering.
"Aberdeen's research indicates that multifunction security solutions are an
increasingly attractive option for deploying and managing security in small
and mid-size enterprises," said Eric Hemmendinger, research director for
security and privacy at Aberdeen Group. "ServGate's EdgeForce platform is a
clear example of the type of solution that is increasingly appealing to IT
buyers, and aggregates multiple security capabilities at the network perimeter
for the enterprise."
"There's a real and growing need for multi-security gateways that provide
modularity and scalability," said Hap Cluff, IT Director for the City of
Norfolk, Va. "ServGate meets that need with products, like EdgeForce Accel,
that boost overall performance and enable new features without replacing the
appliance. These products truly accommodate network expansion and reduce the
risk of obsolescence."
The Accel extends ServGate's EdgeForce line of integrated multi-security
appliances. All products in the EdgeForce series offer the same modular,
scalable architecture for easy integration of additional performance and
security features, enabling the appliance to adapt to each stage of network
growth without replacement.
