StarHub Selected To Connect
National Grid Project
StarHub, Singapore's innovative info-communications provider, announced
that
the National Grid Office has selected StarHub to provide connectivity services
to the National Grid Project, a national initiative aimed at setting up a
central supercomputing environment and infrastructure to consolidate and
facilitate supercomputing in Singapore.
StarHub will be providing high-speed Gigabit Ethernet, ATM and Internet
links
worth $1.2 million for this project. With this collaboration, the National
Grid Office has accorded StarHub the Platinum Partner status, the only
info-communications provider to receive such an award. This award was
presented to StarHub by Minister for Trade and Industry George Yeo during the
official launch of the National Grid Project on Nov. 1 at the Institute of
High Performance Computing.
"With the rapid development in science and technology, we have seen
significant growth in the usage of info-communications services amongst R&D
and academic institutions in Singapore over the last few years," said Dr.
Kaizad Heerjee, vice president for corporate business. "Juxtaposed against
this, StarHub is exceptionally proud that the National Grid Office has
selected us as the conduit for this important national programme that will
inevitably benefit Singapore in the eyes of the world."
The task of the National Grid Project is to facilitate the seamless use of
an
integrated cyber-infrastructure in a secure, effective and efficient manner to
advance scientific, engineering and biomedical research and development with
the longer-term goal of transforming the Singapore economy.
The National Grid Project has the participation of IHPC, Nanyang
Technological
University (NTU), One-North, National University of Singapore (NUS), the
Singapore-MIT Alliance and SingAREN. When fully deployed, the National Grid
will be extended to research institutes, institutions of higher learning and
industry.
