Animation Factory Now Possible
With IT Grid
The promise of a powerful national super computing network has given
Associate
Professor Seah Hock Soon a bright idea.
The dean of Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) school of computer
engineering said it would allow the setting up of an animation factory that
churns out films faster and more efficiently.
Instead of drawing frames manually, the computing power can help generate
up
to 75 percent of the animation needed for a full-length feature like "The Lion
King," which has over 100,000 individual frames.
Making this possible is the National Grid Pilot Platform, a 1 Gb per second
high-speed network that pools the computing resources of several key research
institutions in Singapore.
It was launched yesterday by Trade and Industry Minister George Yeo.
Institutions like those under the Agency for Science Technology and
Research
(A*Star), National University of Singapore and NTU can now tap on each other's
network abilities, and have the combined power of more than 350 central
processing units to carry out their research.
Brigadier-General Yeo said, "In the same way as the energy grid provides
easy
access to power for the industrial economy, the IT Grid will one day provide
easy access to computational resources for the knowledge economy."
