SuperMicro Unveils 1U Itanium 2
Server Solution At IDF Taiwan
SuperMicro has introduced its exciting new line of high-end server
solutions
optimized for high-performance computing (HPC), large databases, modular
computing and storage. Its 1U Itanium 2 server solution, the Super Server
6113M-8, is the world's first viable 1U Itanium 2 platform to meet the
ever-growing demands of the HPC server and large database segments. This
product includes the most sophisticated 1U Itanium 2 serverboard in a standard
extended ATX form factor: the SUPER i2DMR-8G2, and the equally impressive
SC813S-500 chassis, specially optimized for Itanium 2-based solutions.
SuperMicro will mass market its line of DP Itanium 2 solutions by the end of
October.
The big news for enterprise-level server solutions is that SuperMicro has
committed to modular computing products. Planning for a first quarter release
in 2004, SuperMicro's "i-blade" (tentative codename) blade server solution
fashions 14 server blades in a 6U rackmount platform. Each individual i-blade
module is capable of supporting dual Xeon processors, dual Itanium 2
processors, or quad Xeon MP processors, which will occupy two module
spaces.
On the storage front, SuperMicro is currently experiencing great demand for
its Super Server 6013P-T, the world's first and only 1-terabyte SATA in a 1U
form factor DP Xeon solution. The super-dense 6013P-T leads the industry by
supporting dual 533MHz Front Side Bus Xeon Processors of up to 3.2GHz and up
to 1 terabyte of storage space via four hot-swap SATA hard drives. This robust
and sleek system provides top-of-the-line performance for server storage and
mission-critical server applications that demand high storage capacity.
Already the fastest-growing server company in the world today, SuperMicro
is
planning to expand in Asia by building both an R&D center and a manufacturing
center. The company is also being recognized as an ODM leader in the Intel
Enterprise Innovation Alliance. If SuperMicro decides to build its new
facilities in Taiwan, it would provide a substantial boost to the local
economy by providing hundreds of quality jobs and further improve Taiwan's
position as a global technology leader, particularly in the high-end server
segment.
Super Server 6113M-8
Based on the E8870 chipset, the Super Server 6113M-8 has been optimized for
dual Itanium 2 processors up to 1.5GHz with 6MB L3 cache (6.4GB per second
system bus speed) in 1U rackmount form factor. It features one P64H2 bridge
controller and support for one 64-bit-133 MHz PCI-X slot and 4 SCSI or SATA
HDs in a 1U configuration. The 2U system will support up to three 64-bit-133
MHz PCI-X slots and 6 SCSI or SATA HDs instead. The serverboard also offers
support for up to 16GB of regular DDR SDRAM in eight DIMM slots and dual
Gigabit Ethernet ports for excellent networking capabilities. One scalable
node controller and four memory repeater hubs are also included. In addition,
the i2DMR-8G2 features an onboard dual-channel Ultra320 SCSI controller,
making it an ideal choice for technical computing and front-end enterprise
applications.
Intel Itanium 2 processor
The Intel Itanium 2 processor is uniquely designed for demanding enterprise
and technical applications. Itanium 2-based platforms enable businesses and
organizations to maximize their return on investments by delivering
industry-leading performance at generally lower cost and with greater choice
than proprietary RISC technologies. Itanium 2 processors are supported by a
rich ecosystem of highly scalable, open-standard 64-bit solutions from over 40
leading hardware vendors, more than five operating systems including Windows
Server 2003, Linux, and hundreds of applications and tools. In addition,
Itanium 2 processors are binary-compatible with existing Itanium-based
software to provide investment protection.
