VERITAS ENABLES UTILITY COMPUTING
IN SQL SERVER ENVIRONMENTS
VERITAS Software Corp, a leading storage software provider, announced
products
to enable utility computing in Microsoft SQL Server environments, including
the immediate availability of VERITAS i3 for SQL Server, the latest version of
VERITAS' application performance management (APM) software acquired from
Precise Software Solutions. APM is a high-growth market that industry analysts
predict will grow to $4.92 billion by 2006.
For the first time, VERITAS i3 for SQL Server software enables a SQL Server
application manager to monitor a transaction in real-time, from the end-user
through the storage array, to optimize the application performance by rapidly
detecting, correlating, diagnosing, and enabling correction of application
performance problems. VERITAS i3 for SQL Server software supports the most
popular business applications that run on top of the SQL Server database,
including ERP applications such as the latest versions of SAP and
PeopleSoft.
"VERITAS i3 for SQL Server will allow us to identify performance issues and
respond to them in real-time, before they become crises," said John E.
Campbell, director of information services for The CareGroup Provider Service
Network in Boston, which provides services to both CareGroup physicians and
other physician networks. "We host a suite of applications on our SQL Server
database server that must remain up and running at all times. VERITAS i3 for
SQL Server will give us visibility into our production applications by
allowing us to analyze current and past performance data to find performance
problems and prevent them from affecting our customers."
Performance is one of the essential pillars in VERITAS' utility computing
strategy that enables IT departments to offer their service as a utility.
Utility computing represents a fundamental shift in the way that IT delivers
applications to business users. Applications are managed to agreed-upon levels
of availability and performance, adapting dynamically to changing business
demands. Hardware and labor costs are reduced through leveraging shared pools
of storage and servers and automatic provisioning of resources. VERITAS
Software provides the building blocks to enable utility computing -- across
any storage device, server, operating system or business application.
"The Microsoft SQL Server environment is rapidly growing as a platform of
choice for developing and deploying business-critical applications," said Bob
Maness, senior director of product marketing at VERITAS Software. "VERITAS i3
for SQL Server extends our support for SQL Server environments from storage
arrays up through the database and application tiers, and provides a core
building block of performance for customers evolving to a utility computing
model."
VERITAS i3 for SQL Server software is part of VERITAS' broad offering of
products that enable utility computing in SQL Server environments. Other
VERITAS products supporting SQL 2000 on Windows Server 2003 include:
- VERITAS Backup Exec: A cost-conscious backup and restore solution for
Windows environments; includes a snap-in administrator console for simplified
management
- VERITAS NetBackup: An enterprise data protection, archive, and recovery
solution for heterogeneous environments
- VERITAS Storage Replicator: A tool that provides organizations the ability
to protect their remote office data through real-time data replication that
guards against business interruption by keeping data and applications online
and available. Storage Replicator enables backup without disrupting normal
server operations and saves organizations money by eliminating the need to
invest in remote office hardware and administration
VERITAS StorageCentral software and VERITAS volume management technology
for
Windows will support SQL 2000 on Windows Server 2003 later this quarter.
VERITAS Cluster Server, VERITAS Global Cluster Manager, VERITAS SANPoint
Control, and VERITAS Volume Replicator now support SQL 2000 on Windows 2000,
and will support Windows Server 2003 in 2004.
