APPLICATION DEPLOYMENT PLATFORM SOFTWARE MARKET RECOVERING

According to IDC, the application deployment platform (ADP) software market decreased 7 percent worldwide in 2002 compared to 2001, but is showing signs of recovery based on a review of the first half of 2003. IDC believes that the ADP market, which comprises both application and integration server platform software markets, will reach $3.9 billion in revenues in 2003, showing a 0.6 percent increase from 2002. In 2007, application deployment platform software market revenue performance is expected to have fully rebounded and reach nearly $5 billion.

"It is not surprising that the overall application deployment platform software market declined last year," said Dennis Byron, vice president of IDC's Integration and Deployment Software service. "It has become a reflection of the overall software and information technology markets because of its size and pivotal role at the point where applications meet infrastructure and where solutions meet systems."

IDC believes the major market drivers for the remainder of 2003 through 2007 include:

  • The continuing dominance of heterogonous compute environments
  • The move towards fuller platforms by developers and their management due to the ongoing complexity of implementing multiple point-to-point middleware products
  • The need for industry-specific, role-based, and/or size-of-target- organization business process automation (BPA) functionality in application deployment platform software.

Byron added, "The key for suppliers in this market rests on their ability to convince skeptical customers that application and integration server software platforms can provide acceptable levels of return on investment by cutting the time required to complete integration projects and decreasing the ratio of services to license dollars in the overall project costs."

IDC's recently released study, Worldwide Application Deployment Platform Market Competitive Analysis, 2002: With First-Half 2003 Review (IDC #30006) provides details of 2002 software-revenue results in the applications deployment platform software market including market shares for vendors. 2002 growth rates are presented with high-level commentary, and a competitive analysis of leading suppliers. An updated forecast of this market is also included for the years 2003-2007. In addition, this study takes a look at the first half of 2003 as it compares to 2002.
