Richard Laming Vice President Of Avanex Livingston

Avanex Corporation, a global pioneer of cost-effective, high-performance intelligent photonic processing subsystem and module solutions, announced that Dr. Richard I. Laming has been named vice president of Avanex Livingston.

Laming has responsibility for operations at the Avanex facility in Livingston, United Kingdom. The Avanex facility in Livingston is home to Avanex's Center of Excellence in passive optical components based on Fiber Bragg grating, planar lightwave circuit and MEMS technologies.

Laming joined Avanex in July when Avanex acquired Alcatel Optronics France SA, a subsidiary of Alcatel. He was a founder of Kymata in 1998 and served as the company's CTO. After the acquisition of Kymata by Alcatel in 2001 he became CTO of Alcatel Optronics UK Ltd. In these roles he set the strategy covering PLCs, MEMs and hybrids and had the overall lead for technical developments. In September 2002 he became CEO of AOUK, serving in that capacity until the acquisition by Avanex.

Before the founding of Kymata, Laming spent 13 years at the world- renowned Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton University and left as a deputy director. He began his career with the Ford Motor Company, developing electronic engine management systems at Ford's UK R&D centre.

Laming obtained a first class honors degree in mechanical engineering from Nottingham University and Ph.D. from Southampton University. He is a Chartered Engineer, and, at the time of election, the youngest-ever Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and a Distinguished Member of the Alcatel Technical Academy.
