SUN PACKS SECOND DAY OF SunNetwork
CONFERENCE WITH INNOVATION
Sun Microsystems Inc announced more game-changing moves to slash computing
cost and complexity for customers as part of its third quarterly Network
Computing 03 product launch. At the SunNetwork Conference in San Francisco,
the company rolled out the balance of 30 new products and services -- from
desktop to data center systems -- resulting from Sun's $500 million quarterly
investment in R&D innovation.
"We're slashing cost and complexity from all levels of the IT lifecycle to
help our customers build, run and evolve their Network Computing
infrastructure," said Mark Tolliver, executive vice president of Marketing and
Strategy and chief strategy officer with Sun.
Building on the announcement of a radical new approach to software with the
Sun Java System on Wednesday, Sun announced:
- Three new aggressively priced systems for network computing. Based on the
industry-leading SPARC and Solaris OS architecture, the Sun Fire V250 server,
Sun Fire V440 server and Sun Blade 1500 workstation deliver superior value at
lower cost than their competitors
- Continued delivery of new N1 technologies that help companies run their
data center more dynamically and efficiently. In addition to serving 60 N1
customers and launching eight full-scale pilots, Sun introduced N1 CenterRun
4.0 for one-touch application deployment
- New line-up of Sun Ray ultra-thin client technologies that provide one of
the most secure, high-performing and cost-effective desktop solutions on the
market today. The zero-administration client enables users to work securely
from any Sun Ray desktop using a Sun Java Card or smart card, and drives down
administration costs by enabling a single system administrator to manage up to
thousands of desktops at a time
- Eight new Reference Architectures with free "how to" guides providing deep
technical detail on sizing, implementing and scaling everything from
anti-virus to identity server applications
- A new Sun Grid Infrastructure Solution combining the services, Reference
Architectures, Sun Fire V60x Compute Grid, storage and software needed for
setting up a grid environment faster, easier and at a lower cost than
competitors
- Temporary Capacity on Demand (T-COD) allowing customers to quickly turn on
additional processor and memory capacity to meet spikes in business needs and
turn off the resource when no longer needed
- SunForum 3D software allowing remote teams to collaborate using 3-D (Open
GL) applications with Sun Ray thin clients and Sun Blade workstations
A range of new services for ease of management such as Sun Managed Services
Site Support, Sun Sigma Service Level Agreements, SunIT Talent Management
Security Solution and Certified Security Administrator for Solaris.
