VERITAS Enables Utility Computing In Oracle Environments

VERITAS Software Corporation, a leading storage software provider, announced products to enable utility computing in Oracle environments. Over the last 10 years, VERITAS Software has consistently delivered on its promise to improve the availability, performance and manageability of the Oracle database, application server and E-Business Suite.

Utility computing represents a fundamental shift in the way that IT delivers applications to business users. Applications are managed to agreed upon levels of availability and performance, adapting dynamically to changing business demands. Hardware and labor costs are reduced through leveraging shared pools of storage and servers and automatic provisioning of resources. VERITAS Software provides the building blocks to enable utility computing -- across any storage device, server, operating system or business application.

Availability

With more than half the UNIX and Windows market for backup and recovery, VERITAS is the leading data protection solution for Oracle environments. Oracle customers select VERITAS NetBackup for large, heterogeneous environments and VERITAS Backup Exec for predominantly Windows environments. VERITAS is also the leader in volume management, with nearly 70 percent of the market, according to Gartner Group. VERITAS data protection and volume management solutions include support for the widest range of platforms, thousands of devices (such as tape drives, disk arrays and ATA disk devices), and numerous storage networking protocols (including NDMP for network-attached storage devices). The VERITAS NetBackup NDMP option includes advanced database integration that helps further protect and optimize Oracle databases resident on NAS devices.

Performance

VERITAS i3 (formerly Precise i3) application performance management software optimizes the performance of the Oracle database, application server and E- Business Suite. VERITAS i3 also supports the most popular business applications that run on top of the Oracle database -- including SAP, Siebel and PeopleSoft. VERITAS i3 uniquely detects, diagnoses and corrects performance problems from the application all the way down to the storage array.

"I've devoted my career to understanding and managing Oracle and other relational databases and I've found that VERITAS i3 is the very best tool on the market," said Michael Corey, CEO of Ntirety, author of nine Oracle press books and past president of International Oracle Users Group. "VERITAS i3 is unique because it identifies, isolates, and fixes where the real problems lie, even outside the database. For the past year, VERITAS i3 has helped Ntirety boost the performance of our clients' Oracle environments and has been instrumental in Ntirety achieving near-perfect scores in our customer quality surveys."

VERITAS further enhances the performance and manageability of the Oracle database through VERITAS Database Edition, based on its industry-leading storage management software. Finally, backed by the industry's first and only heterogeneous cluster file system, VERITAS Database Edition/Advanced Cluster is designed to enable high availability, increase performance and simplify the management of Oracle9i Real Application Clusters.

Automation

VERITAS SANPoint Control and VERITAS OpForce automate provisioning of servers and storage for Oracle environments. VERITAS SANPoint Control storage resource management software automatically detects and manages storage connected to Oracle servers, simplifying allocation of storage for the database. VERITAS OpForce automatically discovers and deploys servers in the application tier, making it easy for customers to provision servers in Oracle grids.

"For many years Oracle's largest customers have trusted VERITAS to improve the performance and availability of their mission-critical applications and data," said Jeremy Burton, chief marketing officer for VERITAS Software. "VERITAS works with what Oracle customers have today, and gives them peace of mind as they re-think their storage, server and operating system choices and make the move to utility computing."
