METATOMIX CLOSES $8.3 MILLION VENTURE ROUND

Metatomix Inc, a global provider of real-time visibility and integration technology, announced it has closed $8.3 million in a third round of funding. The round was led by new investor, Apex Venture Partners, with participation by Velocity Equity Partners, along with strong support from the company's existing investor base. The new capital will be used to expand Metatomix's market position in the commercial and government markets.

Metatomix, founded in December 2000, has developed its Real-Time Visibility and SMARTE (Surveillance Monitoring and Real-Time Events) Suites based on its innovative application of Semantic Web-based architectures. The Semantic Web extends the Internet by allowing data-driven interactions to enable greater access to all types of information. This evolution extends the original Web concept of people interacting with computers to the sea changing philosophy of machines interacting with machines. Metatomix has harnessed this data-driven network computing technique to deliver real-time information integration and visibility software for commercial applications.

The Metatomix software suites, based on a common, flexible architectural platform, enable corporate enterprises and government agencies to integrate disparate information systems, located virtually anywhere, and gain critical insights in real time. The company has filed numerous patent applications around its innovative intellectual property. As an innovator in the advancement of the Semantic Web for enterprise applications and its use of standards for defining data and metadata such as the W3C standard Resource Description Framework (RDF), Metatomix's complete real-time platform is made up of three components:

  • Metatomix Interchange Platform -- message-oriented middleware designed to interface to any existing information systems and data sources to gather information.
  • The Hologram Store -- a persistent XML-based cache where data is aggregated and patterns and trends are identified delivered in real- time.
  • Visibility Dashboard -- Web-based graphical interface producing immediate graphical, GIS, and tabular business insight and analytics as events occur.

Metatomix has successfully penetrated its target markets in financial services, hospitality, and state and local governments serving customers that include Union Planters, Millennium Copthorne, Politzer & HANEY, the State of Florida, Massachusetts Emergency Management Association (MEMA) and the Middlesex County Sheriff (Massachusetts), among others.

Apex Venture Partners has more than $500 million of capital under management and a 15-year track record of funding and building early stage technology companies. Also participating in this round, and making their first investment in Metatomix, are Velocity Equity Partners, a private venture capital firm investing in early stage growth companies primarily in the Northeast, as well as several other institutional and individual investors. Additionally, the company's current investor group of Equity Resources Group, Tudor Ventures, First Light Capital, Claflin Capital, Delta Capital, Bingham McCutchen and numerous individual investors participated.

"Metatomix's innovative applications, based upon Semantic Web-based technology, to deliver real-time technologies; the strength and strong accolades from its customer base and partners; its significant market opportunities across many verticals; and the experienced executive team gave us the strong motivation to invest in this company," said Wayne Boulais, general partner at Apex Venture Partners. "We are excited to work with this team to expand its market penetration and build on its recent successes."

"This recent infusion of capital will allow us to expand our presence in the commercial and government markets by ramping up our sales and marketing efforts as well as furthering the development of our core technologies," said Bob Angelo, president and CEO of Metatomix. "We are very excited about attracting a lead investor the caliber of Apex, encouraged by Metatomix's ability to continue to raise venture capital in this tough economic climate, and appreciative of the continued support by our existing investors."
