SAS JOINS ECLIPSE
CONSORTIUM
SAS, a leader in business intelligence, announced that it has become a
member
of Eclipse, a broad consortium of software development vendors working
together to help support and promote the Eclipse universal tools integration
platform. SAS also announced that Rich Main, director of Java development
environments, was elected to represent SAS on the Eclipse Board of
Stewards.
SAS, the largest privately held software company in the world, has long
advocated and supported the need for open standards and designs that address
multiplatform environments, thus ensuring that SAS customers have the
flexibility to deploy applications in the environment that matches their
business needs. SAS is actively involved in numerous standards organizations,
including Data Mining Group, Global Grid Forum, Java Community Process, Object
Management Group and XML/A Council. By joining the Eclipse consortium, SAS
will assist in the community effort to create and enhance an open,
enterprise-class development environment for the Java and J2EE platforms.
"SAS is pleased to participate as a member of Eclipse, and we will play an
active role in fostering tool interoperability and integration within the
Eclipse framework," said Keith Collins, senior vice president and chief
technology officer at SAS. "Our commitment to open standards and experience
with enterprise business intelligence software will ensure that Eclipse users
can easily utilize the full analytical power of SAS software for their
applications -- allowing them to provide their end users with a broader range
of solutions than ever before."
Eclipse's open platform allows tool vendors to take advantage of a flexible
plug-in architecture that creates an easy-to-use, integrated development
environment. With Eclipse's popular Java development tools, users will benefit
from quick and seamless integration with SAS' extensive suite of warehousing,
analytics and business intelligence solutions.
"We certainly recognize the popularity of Eclipse within the development
community. SAS has always been committed to supporting key software platforms
of importance to our customers, such as Java, J2EE and .NET," said Main. "In
line with this commitment, we plan to provide SAS application development
capabilities for Eclipse. We believe this combination will benefit enterprise
software developers by providing them with the ability to rapidly create
solutions that harness the power of SAS software to drive intelligent decision
making."
"Eclipse welcomes SAS' involvement in becoming a supporting member of the
consortium and contributing to the advancement of open, enterprise-class
standards," said Skip McGaughey, chairman of the Eclipse Board of Stewards.
"We welcome the positive influence SAS brings to the board through its
commitment to the software development community. SAS' leadership role in the
business intelligence market significantly broadens the consortium's impact
for all developers interested in using enterprise class Business Intelligence
from Eclipse."
Main joins members from IBM, Intel, HP, Red Hat, Fujitsu and other leading
companies on the Eclipse Board of Stewards. The board will hold its next
quarterly meeting Sept. 3 in Chicago.
