Rogue Wave Launches Product For Working With Web in C/C++

Rogue Wave Software Inc, a leading provider of reusable software components and services that facilitate application development, announced the release of LEIF 1.2. This version is the first deliverable in the company's new service-based application development strategy.

Despite the growing popularity of Java and C#, C/C++ still serves as the foundation for a significant number of mainstream business applications. However, unlike J2EE and Microsoft .NET, which have development environments that are rich with "out of the box" tools including those for creating Web services, a comparable environment does not exist for C/C++.

Rogue Wave's LEIF makes Web services a viable option for the many companies with business-critical C/C++ applications. With LEIF, organizations can expose the functionality of C/C++ applications as Web services without major code rewrites, permitting seamless interoperability with Microsoft .NET and J2EE applications. Key enhancements in LEIF 1.2 include:

  • GUI Project Wizard -- Introduces an intuitive graphical Project Wizard that helps developers of all backgrounds quickly become productive with LEIF.
  • Pluggable Protocols -- Allows developers to write and use custom transports other than the default HTTP.
  • XML Document Validation -- Ensures that XML documents adhere to restrictions specified in the XML Schema.
  • Customizable Marshaling and Unmarshaling Behavior -- Helps developers create custom behavior for the elements in their XML documents.
  • Improved Performance / XML Schema Support -- Offers improved code generation times and runtime performance as well as broader XML Schema support.
  • HTTPS/SSL Client and Authorization Support -- Allows developers to create secure clients.
  • Improved Fault Support -- Delivers better error handling and support for SOAP faults.

"This new release should facilitate the adoption of Web services and XML by companies with large investments in C/C++," said Rogue Wave Senior Product Manager Tim Triemstra. "Many companies that fit this profile understand the promise of Web services, but have delayed adoption of this emerging technology because of the perceived difficulty of working with Web services in C/C++. Re- writing C/C++ business logic in Java or C# is also too costly. LEIF offers a straightforward, cost-effective solution for bringing C/C++ applications into an architecture that includes Microsoft .NET or Java/J2EE applications."

In keeping with Rogue Wave's cross-platform tradition, LEIF 1.2 provides support for a broad range of operating systems and C++ compilers from vendors such as Microsoft, Red Hat, SuSE, Intel, Sun Microsystems, IBM and Hewlett- Packard. LEIF 1.2 is available immediately from Rogue Wave Software and through authorized resellers. A package that includes LEIF development rights plus one year of maintenance and support for LEIF lists at $1495 per developer. Deployment pricing for LEIF lists at $1995 per platform, per CPU.
