Networking:
GarrettCom Deploys New Managed
Ethernet Switch
The Magnum 6K16V Managed Fiber Switch is the only product on the market
today with modular, per-port fiber access from 10Mb to 1Gb, "big switch"
management features including standards-compatible support for self-healing
rings, and gigabit backbone configurability in one small-footprint package.
The next-generation industrial switch offers highly flexible and modular
support for heavy-duty LAN switching in industrial and telecommunication
applications. The 6K16V is targeted to outdoor, hostile-environment
applications such as traffic control and transportation systems, power utility
substations, factory floors and telecom traffic interconnects. An added
benefit is its easy adaptability to performance and cabling upgrades as users
adopt increasingly sophisticated high-bandwidth technologies.
"The demand for sophisticated but hardened Ethernet switches for heavy-duty
applications is growing rapidly along with the steep growth curve for
adaptation of high-bandwidth technologies such as video for surveillance and
quality control, redundant SCADA systems, VOiP and Comm-over-Ethernet," said
GarrettCom President Frank Madren. "GarrettCom has a reputation for innovative
networking solutions in industrial markets. Our close relationships with
leaders in industrial market segments has enabled us to be first out of the
starting block with this small but powerful outdoors switch that can be placed
practically anywhere and support any combination of cabling and performance
requirements."
The 6K16V has access to all the high-end features of GarrettCom's MNS-6K
software because it uses the same switching and computing platform as other
members of the 6K Switch family. These features include a wide variety of LAN
management and security software including industry standards such as Spanning
Tree Protocol (STP) and GarrettCom's standards-based, performance-enhancing
Link-Loss-Learn and S-Ring features. S-Ring redundancy management software
allows fast recovery in ring topologies at the edge of a network, where
downtime can be most crucial. It is compatible with standard STP algorithms.
GarrettCom's Link-Loss-Learn feature triggers re-learning of a switch's
address table when LINK is lost on any designated port, resulting in faster
network rerouting and fault recovery.
GarrettCom offers the new Magnum 6K16V with all industrial and
telecommunications industry DC power options, including dual source power.
Worldwide AC power is also available.
A mix of port types and speeds provides the highest flexibility in network
deployments. The 6K16V Switch offers unique port-type modularity from 10 Mb to
1 Gb, and mixed media ranging from copper through single- and multi-mode fiber
with any fiber connector types. Combinations of copper and fiber ports are
increasingly popular in industrial LANs where fiber is chosen for noise
immunity, distance, and ground-loop avoidance.
In a first for industrial switches, GarrettCom tests and reports both a
long
term temperature rating and a short term temperature rating for the product.
The 6K16V's long-term ambient temperature rating of minus 40 C to 60 C is
based on traditional Component Parts rating methods such as UL 60950. The
short-term and emergency-duty temperature range of minus 50 C to 95 C is based
on IEC 60068 Type Tests.
The compact Magnum 6K16V is about the size of a hardcopy novel (9.5"H x
8.75"W
x 1.75"D). It has a ventilated metal case and is mounted vertically for
convection cooling. When panel-mounted in a factory-floor enclosure, its port
density is roughly 2 ports per half-inch of width for 10/100 copper or SFF
fiber ports.
