Altiris Offers Native-Linux OS Deployment Configuration

Altiris Inc, a leader in systems management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning information technology, announced new cross-platform server provisioning capabilities that provide native-Linux support for Linux provisioning, bare-metal OS deployment and on-going management, and system configuration. Also, Altiris UNIX solutions now further integrate heterogeneous management with additional platform support, increased security features and new server change management for more efficient server provisioning.

The Deloitte Consulting Global Data Center uses Altiris heterogeneous server provisioning solutions to drastically reduce the time and cost of managing approximately 1000 servers, a majority of which are HP ProLiant servers, located in their global operation centers around the world. Ron Pepin, Deloitte Consulting Global Data Center manager, went on to say, "Through an analysis of our consolidated global metrics, we have determined that Altiris solutions have helped us drastically increase our hardware ROI by significantly reducing manual management tasks for our global operation centers."

Patrick Hanifee, Deloitte Consulting Global Data Center systems architect, said, "Altiris server provisioning solutions allow us to automate server OS imaging, policy-based software delivery including patch management, and hardware and software inventory management across Windows 2000 and NT, HP-UX, Linux and Solaris platforms. We have been able to reduce the time it takes us to deploy a server to 25 minutes from four hours. Full discovery and accountability of our hardware and software inventory is now available to us in real-time in a matter of minutes as opposed to spending weeks to get a partial and often inaccurate report. Altiris has helped us standardize OS rollouts, save significant time and money by automating manual processes, and reduce human error to help us create a world-class data center."

Altiris Deployment Solution for Servers is included in the HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack, an integrated HP and Altiris solution that automates the process of deploying and provisioning HP ProLiant servers, enabling companies to quickly and easily adapt to changing business demands. ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack Windows edition is now available while the new Linux edition is currently scheduled to be available in September. Both editions include:

  • Integrated Altiris Deployment Solution and ProLiant Integration Module featuring HP ProLiant server pre-configured scripts and integrated support software
  • Instant, out-of-the-box functionality for ProLiant servers
  • Specially designed with unique features for ProLiant blade servers

According to Gartner research, "The growing acceptance of Linux has forced many organizations to view Linux as less of a tactical solution and more of an integrated part of the organization's overall IT strategy. This strategy most always includes hardware/software systems from major IT vendors," Poul Nielsen, Altiris vice president of marketing and product strategy, said. "More and more organizations are adopting Linux for its cost savings, efficiencies and reliability. With the growing adoption of Linux on servers, IT managers increasingly require a centralized, cross-platform solution to efficiently manage Linux, Windows and UNIX. By providing a single price for flexible management across platforms, we seek to deliver outstanding value to our customers. Our award-winning Windows and Linux server OS deployment and configuration management technology helps reduce the complexity and costs of server provisioning."
